Description
We’re looking for an experienced and motivated leader to join our Northern Timberlands business as the District Planning Lead for the Moosehead District. Reporting to the Moosehead Harvest & Transportation Manager, this full-time, exempt position provides a unique opportunity to lead planning operations across 400,000 acres of diverse forestland. While your primary focus will be on the Moosehead District, your efforts will contribute to shaping the future of sustainable forestry across the broader New England Region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead with Purpose: Manage and inspire a team of three Planning Foresters, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth
- Strategic Planning: Develop and oversee comprehensive harvest plans tailored to the Moosehead District, ensuring alignment with broader regional objectives
- Budget Oversight: Coordinate contract services budgets and ensure accurate district-wide production forecasts
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Roads Forester to manage contractor capacity and maintain efficient operations
- Operational Excellence: Prepare ready-to-log harvest plans (8-12 months in advance), balancing district-specific needs with long-term regional goals
- Safety Leadership: Serve as a role model for safety, proactively identifying and addressing risks to uphold our commitment to safety excellence
- Timber Management Expertise: Apply advanced forestry techniques, including harvest prescriptions, volume estimation, environmental impact assessments, and adherence to sustainable forestry guidelines.
- Market Awareness: Maintain sharp insights into local market dynamics while ensuring boundary line maintenance and effective stumpage cruising practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Forestry or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of professional experience and education
- At least 3 years of related working experience (5 or more years' experience is preferred), and at least 8 years of overall related experience, which can be a combination of education and experience
- In-depth understanding of harvesting techniques, wood flow dynamics, and marketing strategies
- Proven ability to construct, implement, and manage budgets effectively
- Demonstrated experience inspiring and motivating teams, with a track record of driving transformative initiatives
- Skilled in negotiation and the administration of contracts
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a deep understanding of forest economics and data analysis.
- Knowledge of cruise design methodologies, sampling techniques, and forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Experience with Forest Inventory/GIS systems, with openness to adopting Weyerhaeuser’s tools
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and eagerness to adopt and effectively utilize mobile applications to enhance operations
- A strong dedication to safety protocols and the ability to foster a culture of safety among teams
- Exceptional ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a knack for effective collaboration
- Thrives in dynamic, team-oriented environments and is open to taking on additional projects as needed
Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $79,330 - $118,995 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 7% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.
Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours.
