Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the region-designated expert for the DNR Service Forestry wildland-urban interface (WUI) fuels reduction program. Provides expert-level consultation to region Service Forestry staff to ensure projects meet funding source and program requirements, objectives, goals, and deliverables. Performs as region point of contact regarding fuels reduction program inquiries from the public.  
  • At the regional level, works collaboratively through scheduling and facilitating specific project area prioritization meetings with community partners and collaborating agencies. Coordinates with the next higher organizational level, other agencies, cooperators, and community partners to develop interagency fuels strategies. Represents the organization in multi-agency fuels management activities. Conducts public outreach to potential clients in high-priority areas.
  • Serves as the region-designated expert regarding the development and implementation of the Post Fire Recovery program.
  • Performs as region point of contact regarding post-fire recovery program inquiries from the public. Works collaboratively with Forest Resilience Division staff and partnering agencies to develop and build the program. Provides expert-level consultation to region Service Forestry staff to ensure projects meet funding source and program objectives, goals, and deliverables. Provides post-fire recovery process and documentation guidance and ensures data collection and storage meet acceptable standards.
  • Assists non-industrial private forest landowners in the development of new or revised forest stewardship plans in the Northeast Region. Provides quality forestry consultation, silvicultural prescription assistance, and financial assistance to landowners through cost-share programs. Review incoming applications, perform site visits with the landowner or consultant, and submit appropriate dollar amounts for the requested prescriptions for approval.
  • Assists landowners with fire prevention education in coordination with the region fire prevention coordinator. This includes providing landowners with fire prevention education, residential risk assessment, and other Firewise USA-type education. Complete residential risk assessment with and fuels reduction projects with structures at initial sign-up and at the completion of practice.
  • Supervision of four positions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resources or similar field;
    AND two years of professional experience;
    OR, a combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience regarding fuels reduction project planning and implementation.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior principles and suppression techniques.
  • Experience with forest fire prevention.
  • Experience in forest management, silviculture, and forestry practices.
  • Experience providing public fire safety and forestry education.
  • Proven ability to schedule and facilitate meetings with a diverse group of partners.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Accustomed to interacting with the public.
