Classification:           Salaried/Exempt

Start Date:               February 2025

Term:                        3 years with possible extension based on funding

Salary:                      $65-75K, DOE plus benefits (Health Insurance, Paid Time Off, and 401K)

Position Locations:

  • Negotiable within the species range of Mule Deer and/or Black-tailed Deer, preferred consideration will be given to applicants in the Mountain Time Zone.
  • This is a work from home office position with occasional travel.

Job Description

MDF is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to fill the role of a GIS Coordinator/Data Manager (Coordinator) for the organization’s conservation programs.  In this role, you will be a critical member of our conservation team by providing expertise in geospatial analysis, data management, remote sensing, and cartographic skills. The Coordinator will work with our conservation staff to address a diversity of geospatial needs for our on-the-ground programs, collaborate in enhancing projects with GIS support, provide spatial data analysis and maps for project documentation and promotion, and manage MDF’s project database(s). The Coordinator will also provide GIS-based information to MDF communications and marketing teams and leadership to promote MDF project accomplishments and project priorities. This position will range from mapping, modeling, and database management to leadership and creativity for exploring solutions to the pressing needs that will guide conservation strategy and implementation. The Coordinator will also lead in preparing maps, storyboards, and other geographic and data material for documents, promotional efforts, websites, social, and other venues. Key Responsibilities

  • Cartography: Create high-quality maps and charts for project reports, collaborator requests, publications, and MDF’s website. Maintain and update as needed MDF’s Priority Herds and Landscapes Program database and maps. 
  • GIS Analyses: Conduct a variety of GIS analyses ranging from remote sensing, species distribution models, and habitat modeling. These analyses will range in complexity depending on project or program needs. 
  • Data Management: Adhere to the highest standard of data management to develop and maintain GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy and integrity. Maintain project and program organization in a variety of software (e.g., ESRI programs, Dropbox, etc.). 
  • Innovation: Help to lead efforts to stay informed and implement new technologies and oversee their application to ask and answer complex questions.
  • Communication: Communicate regularly and effectively with team members and project partners in GIS methodology and analyses to problem-solve and complete projects. 

Skills Required/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Professional experience (2+ years preferred) in GIS analysis and cartography
  • Proficiency in ESRI GIS software (e.g. - ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, etc.)
  • Experience with remote sensing and landscape analyses
  • Experience with spatial data management, editing, and conversion
  • Strong skills in map creation, data visualization, and report generation
  • Experience in ESRI team account management
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or within a team
  • Excellent problem solving, prioritization, communication, and organizational skills to manage multiple projects
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL) for GIS automation is a plus
