Midwest Natural Resources (MNR) is a natural resources consulting company focused on providing ecological field services. Well known for our botanical and ecological expertise, we serve a wide variety of clients including federal, state, and local agencies, private-sector industries, as well as non-profit organizations. We work throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Plains in a wide diversity of ecological systems.
This position will support projects that may include rare plant surveys, threatened and endangered species habitat assessments and surveys, rare native plant community assessments, general native plant community mapping and classification, native prairie mapping and monitoring, post-construction vegetation and wetland monitoring, wetland delineations, comprehensive natural resource inventories, as well as development of habitat management plans.
Our ideal candidate is a skilled GIS professional with previous experience supporting field crews working within Esri ArcGIS Online and Trimble GNSS receiver systems, as well as review and QA/QC of field data collection. The candidate would also have at least a basic background in general tech support and IT structures, with model/scripting experience using tools such as Esri Model Builder and Python.
Work Environment:
- The work environment will be a full-time in-office position, with the potential for flexible remote work.
Job Responsibilities:
- Administer and manage the GIS for both the company and within specific projects, as well as maintain and improve the company GIS to better serve field survey efforts.
- Build and manage projects used for field data collection, primarily utilizing Esri ArcGIS Online and Field Maps.
- Process, review, and compile field data collected by field survey crews.
- Finalize client spatial data submissions and create maps and other figures to be included in project reports.
- Set up, manage, and troubleshoot the company’s GNSS receivers and licenses, e.g. Trimble DA2 receivers using Trimble Catalyst license subscriptions.
- Organize and maintain the company’s catalog of background spatial data.
- Regularly assess the company’s GIS for areas of improvement to more efficiently serve field data collection efforts, as well as implement these changes. This may include:
- Creating/modifying workflow processes and automations.
- Creating reusable scripts and tools to be used by project managers.
- Assessing and updating field attribute schemas used in field data collection.
- Georectify aerial imagery and maps.
- Convert data across different file types and structures (Shapefiles, geodatabases, KMZ/KML, CAD data, data dictionaries, etc.).
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (GIS, geography, computer science, data science, ecology, etc.)
- Either:
- 2+ years of professional experience performing GIS-related tasks
- OR an advanced degree in a relevant field
- In-depth knowledge of Esri software suite, including ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro, and especially ArcGIS Online and Field Maps
- Experience with geospatial data storage and management
- Ability to create high-quality maps and figures for technical reports
- Proficient with all commonly used geospatial data formats, including geodatabases, shapefiles, CAD data, raster data, etc.
- Knowledge and experience in programming/scripting, especially in relation to geospatial scripts and workflows
- Required: experience with Python, Esri model builder, and basic SQL.
- Preferred: extensive experience in Python. At least some knowledge of languages such as JavaScript, Dart, Java, R, Arcade, CSS, HTML, etc.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite, especially Microsoft Excel
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Clear communicator with a team-oriented nature
- Must be a US citizen
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3-5+ years of professional experience performing GIS-related tasks
- Professional or academic experience in environmental science, biology, ecology, or botany
- GIS certification (GISP or other certifications)
- Experience with common web development languages/tools, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, etc.
- Experience with one or more common frontend or backend frameworks/tools, such as Flutter, React, Django, Bootstrap, MUI
- Basic familiarity with Linux server access and usage
- Experience with creating Esri Survey123 data collection forms
- Experience using QGIS
- Experience with Trimble Catalyst-based GNSS receiver platforms
Pay/Benefits:
- Pay range is $70,000 to $80,000 as base salary dependent on qualifications and experience
