Grassland Bird Season Field Research Technician

Seasonal technician positions (up to 3, depending on funding) are available for summer 2025 from the School of Natural Resources, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The technicians will be responsible for assisting the researcher with a study of grassland associated birds in privately owned working farmlands of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and proven ability in locating nests, particularly for grassland species. However, applicants without nest searching experience will also be considered.

Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):

*Nest searching and nest checks
*Avian point counts
*Vegetation survey/sampling
*Data entry

Applicant requirements:

*Valid driver’s license
*Ability to locate bird nests by searching and/or by behavioral cues
*Ability to identify grassland associated birds by auditory and visual cues
*Ability to identify/learn to identify common pasture/grassland vegetation
*Ability to navigate to multiple properties across the study region
*Respect for and communication with private landowners/farm operators
*Ability to work independently after training

This position will require a lot of traveling to various study sites across the study area. A work vehicle and travel-related lodging will be provided. Partial lodging support may be available for temporary, non-work related housing. These are seasonal positions and will begin in early May and continue until approximately late June or middle July, depending on project needs.
