SUMMARY: As a professional Resource Biologist, perform professional environmental, fisheries, or related resource biological analysis and coordination, conducts surveys, assist with the coordination of enhancement and management plans, and provide technical consultative services in specialty areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Work with regional partners to identify, propose, and coordinate salmon habitat restoration and conservation projects within the Tribe’s Usual and Accustomed Area (U&A).
• Identify, develop, and implement freshwater habitat data collection and monitoring projects beneficial to the fishery resource.
• Monitor physical stream habitat parameters and channel conditions throughout the Tribes U&A.
• Conduct field inventories of fish populations assessing fish usage including assessment of migration barriers. 
• Coordinate and maintain a Tribal Invasive Species Program. 
• Manage project site-maintenance and other stewardship activities on lands owned by The Tribe. 
• Coordinate with local Watershed Lead Entities to identify, develop, and prioritize salmon habitat restoration/conservation projects.
• Provide technical reports and recommendations to be considered by senior biologists and policy personnel for their use in developing Tribal policy positions on freshwater fisheries habitat issues.
• Effectively communicate with senior biologist on a regular basis.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibility.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrable knowledge of reading and interpreting engineering designs.
• Working knowledge of Pacific Northwest salmon biology/ecology.
• Knowledge of current habitat assessment and restoration techniques.
• Working knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental rules and regulations.
• Experience in grant writing.
• At least one year of habitat restoration experience preferred. 
• Ability to work productively both alone and in a team.
• Strong organizational, multi-tasking, prioritization skills with attention to details and follow through to resolve any outstanding issues.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and online meeting platforms.
• Diligent and self-motivated. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients and other employees. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, use whole numbers, common fraction and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to use geometry for site design. Ability to understand basic statistical summaries that include bell curves, minimum, mean, median, maximum, rolling mean, and linear trends.  Ability to understand pollutant concentrations and loads.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License. Boating experience and diving certification.

The job requires the employee to regularly lift and/or move over 10 pounds. The employee is frequently required to lift to 50 pounds.

Special vision requirements for this position are close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. 

The job requires the employee to be able to walk at times a number of miles of stream of which often is through changing terrain, a lot of bending, climbing, stooping, and crouching may be a factor. Will need to be able to carry gravel bags weighing 30 to 40 pounds over short distances.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently required to work near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and around vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or air born particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. 

Most of the job duties will require you to perform outdoors in all types of weather. Also, must be comfortable being able to work in and around open waters.  

OTHER: This position may require you to work weekends and holidays.

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science in related field and 3 years of relevant experience OR Associate of Arts Degree in a related field and 5 years of relevant experience. OR High School Diploma or GED and 7 years of natural resource relevant experience. Course work in fisheries, biology or related field may substitute for experience.
