Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire one (1) full-time, seasonal position in Cheyenne, WY to assist in conducting instream flow studies on native cutthroat trout streams in western Wyoming. The position is 4 months in duration. Applicants unable to work from late May to late August should not apply.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Use land surveying equipment (total station, auto level, laser level), GPS devices, velocity meters, and data loggers to collect stream channel morphology, depth, velocity, water level, discharge, substrate, cover, temperature, and other stream habitat data in remote areas.
  • Operate 4X4 vehicles.
  • Perform data entry and quality control.
  • Review and manage images from phone and trail cameras.
  • Perform routine maintenance of sampling gear.
  • Electronically scan and file historical instream flow study documents.
  • Communicate well with members of the public, landowners, and personnel from various agencies and professionally represent the WGFD.
  • Maintain a positive attitude during inclement weather, physically demanding conditions, and during interactions with members of the public.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those currently holding or pursuing a degree in fisheries or wildlife management, aquatic ecology, ichthyology, hydrology, watershed science, or a closely related field. This may include preference towards those with a high school degree plus experience in stream habitat assessment or college coursework in fisheries or wildlife management, aquatic ecology, ichthyology, hydrology, watershed science, or a closely related field.  
 
Strong preference will be given to candidates that attach a position-specific cover letter, resume, and college transcripts to the State of Wyoming online application. **Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision and to work well with others on a small crew.
  • Ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly and apply those skills efficiently.
  • Knowledge of stream habitat quality and condition and habitat requirements of stream fish species.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to perform fieldwork under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to wade swift streams.
  • Ability to carry a 40 lb. backpack while hiking into and out of the backcountry.
  • Must be willing to perform extensive travel across the state in Department vehicles.
  • Overnight travel will be required.
  • Camping in remote areas may be required
  • Weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, including early mornings and late evenings.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before appointment.
  • The tentative dates for this position are May 19– September 19.
  • Off-duty housing is not provided.
  • Lodging, waders, rain gear, uniform, and all other necessary field equipment and expenses will be provided when in the field.
  • The technician may occasionally assist other department crews in vegetation monitoring, electrofishing, netting, stream surveys, and other tasks.
