Reports to:  Senior Research Associate 

Location:  Washington D.C. or remote eligible 

Classification: Intern

Job Summary: 

NCAI is a national leader in policy and government relations concerning issues impacting Tribal Nations and peoples.   

The Institute for Environmental Sovereignty’s mission is to advance Tribal Nations’ leadership in natural resource governance and environmental stewardship; the safeguarding of Indigenous peoples’ cultural heritage linked to the landscape and natural environment; and innovative Indigenous-led approaches to environmental protection. 

The intern will assist the NCAI Institute for Environmental Sovereignty with a groundbreaking study that aims to better understand environmental priorities across Indian Country. The intern will assist the Senior Research Associate with data collection and data analysis, data organization, thematic analysis, and data preparation., The intern will also be responsible for coordinating meetings with tribal citizens, organization of group meetings, as well as associated logistics and note-taking during these meetings.

 Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the coordination of meetings, interviews, and group meetings with tribal members and intertribal organizations. 
  • Coordinate travel arrangements with study participants. 
  • Assist with note taking during project meetings. 
  • Conduct desk research on tribal environmental issues. 
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of data and data files. 
  • Conduct thematic analysis. 
  • Assist with the preparation of data for data analysis. 
  • Assist with survey design and distribution. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Last-year undergraduate student or graduate student early in their program. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a program on environmental studies, sustainability, conservation, related field, or in the intersection of the former with sociology or psychology. 
  • 1-2 years of experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research. 
  • Experience working with tribes and/or intertribal organizations, preferred. 
  • Experience using Atlas.ti and/or Qualtrics, preferred. 
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods and analysis, preferred. 
  • Experience coding with R, preferred. 

Required/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods. 
  • Basic understanding of data quality control and quality assurance, data privacy, 
  • and data management. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (mainly Word and Excel), Google Drive, 
  • Google Docs, and Google Sheets. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. 
  • Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills. 
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback to improve work products. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong emotional intelligence, including the ability to build trust and rapport in relationships with people from multiple backgrounds. 
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. 

Working Conditions & Physical Demands: 

  • Physically mobile with reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to read computer screens, email and talk on the phone. 
  • Ability to bend, reach, kneel, twist and grip items while working at assigned desk area.

Supervisory Responsibilities: none 

Compensation:   This position starts with $20.00 per hour. 

Work Hours and Environment: This is a twenty (20) hours per calendar week position, per three (3) semesters.
