Title: Invasive Species Technician

Position Type: Seasonal appointment. 2 positions available. Full time (40 hours/week). 5/27/2025 - 11/26/2025

Work will typically revolve around a weekday schedule of Monday through Friday from 8am through 4:30pm. Weekend work is less typical and can be discussed on a case by case, with the hope of applicant availability. 

Compensation:  

Contingent upon funding, with an anticipated rate of $19.04/hour

Position Description:   

The regional Invasive Species Technician will work closely with the OPRHP Regional Biologist, Stewardship Specialist, and Invasive Species Unit staff to meet regional and statewide stewardship goals. The work of the Invasive Species Technician will focus largely on supporting projects that involve the protection of rare, threatened and endangered species and natural communities on park lands and Historic Sites. Job duties will primarily involve the management, survey, and monitoring of invasive species (both terrestrial and aquatic), but may also include site restoration and monitoring, database management, project planning, education/outreach, as well as other stewardship duties to be determined at the discretion of regional staff.  

Position Locations:   

Position is based out of Saratoga Spa State Park, and travel will be required within the Saratoga-Capital region for state parks. A vehicle will be provided for any travel within parks. No overnights are expected.   

Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Support regional Stewardship staff in planning projects to meet regional goals 
  • Remove, survey, and/or monitor invasive species (terrestrial and aquatic plants, forest pest and pathogens) 
  • Provide guidance and support to field staff and volunteers (SCA, partners, ECC, etc.) 
  • Collect and manage field data using applications and standardized methods (Survey123, iMap, Field Maps, etc.)
  • Maintain up-to-date project information in statewide databases (ArcGIS, iMap, DESP) 
  • Respond promptly to statewide Early Detection and Rapid Response needs 
  • Perform native plantings and other restoration duties 
  • Assist with stewardship projects that help reach regional and statewide goals 
  • Organize and participate in education and outreach events 
  • Conduct trainings for regional staff and volunteers (Best Management Practices, iMap Invasives, etc.) 

Qualifications:  

  • Excellent organizational skills in a field setting 
  • A working knowledge of GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods 
  • Ability to work, and maintain a good attitude, while performing physical work in a variety of conditions 
  • Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year or more experience with invasive species identification and control methods 
  • Backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace experience a plus 
  • A degree or experience in forestry, environmental studies, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as aquatic ecology, conservation biology, etc.
