The role of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Sentinel Landscape (JBLM) Resilience Specialist is to collaborate closely with partners to identify, implement and accelerate collaborative projects protecting the military mission of JBLM, advancing agricultural and community resilience, and supporting prairie habitat restoration and management. This position will be part of a dynamic team developing innovative natural resource management strategies in the South Puget Sound region. The Resilience Specialist will work in close coordination with the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator, the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Working Groups/Committees, local partners, and the installation to develop collaborative, near-and long-term, resilience and adaptation projects.

The JBLM Resilience Specialist will report to LegacyWorks Group (LWG or LegacyWorks) and the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator to identify adaptation and resilience strategies in a rapidly developing region. The specialist will work with Coordinator to develop projects conserving and managing prairie habitat, working to recover ESA listed prairie species, and supporting agricultural social, economic, and community infrastructure on a regional scale. At the discretion of the Coordinator, the Resilience Specialist may work directly with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff on how to utilize NRCS technical and financial assistance programs. The Resilience Specialist will assist the Coordinator in updating the implementation plans and other documents for resilience issues. This position is hybrid and will be based in or around Olympia, WA and require travel throughout South Puget Sound with additional regional and national travel. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Support the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator and LWG to advance resilience planning and actions;
  • Assess and record the state of resilience and adaptation planning, projects and priorities of federal, state, and local government agencies, military installations, NGOs, and communities  within the JBLM Sentinel Landscape boundary;
  • Identify, recommend, and pursue funding for individual partner actions that support implementation plans, including administration of grants and contracts. Solicit project ideas and develop proposals for projects and potential landscape resilience-related scientific research needs for short- and long-term timelines;
  • Coordinate with and support the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator in facilitating various partners and any relevant work groups and/or military installations to advance and synchronize resilience coordination, planning and actions for the Landscape;
  • At the discretion of the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator, participate in relevant events, conferences, and meetings;
  • Identify issues affecting local tribes and rural and historically underserved stakeholders within the JBLM; 
  • Assist the JBLM Sentinel Landscape Coordinator in developing reporting metrics and standards for landscapes including disaster resilience;
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports as required to report progress on resilience and disaster adaptation projects activities.

  • Experience in building, managing, and maintaining partnerships
  • Experience working with Native American groups and Tribal natural resource management programs
  • Experience with agricultural and working landowners
  • Experience with collaborative integrated project development coordinating habitat restoration and working lands priorities  
  • Experience with the administration of federal and/or state grants, agreements, and contracts 
  • Working knowledge of the military services and/or US Department of Defense
  • Familiarity with prairie and oak woodland restoration and management

Hours & Pay

This position is full-time exempt with an average schedule of 40 hours of work per week.

The salary range is $80,680-95,805 based on relevant qualifications and experience.
