Typical Tasks
- Plant removal for fire abatement, habitat enhancement, and invasive plant control using a variety of methods including pesticides, hand tools, line trimmers, chainsaws, brush mowers, and chippers.
- Habitat enhancement including weeding, planting, and irrigation. Refuse removal including the picking up, bagging, and hauling of trash; collection of metal debris for recycling; the removal and disposing of fencing.
- Access control including installation of fencing, gates and signs, repair and maintenance of fencing, gates, and signs.
- Erosion control in order to maintain roads and trails.
- Maintenance of all tools used along with the minor maintenance of vehicles.
- Trail maintenance and occasional trail building.
- Housekeeping tasks including cleaning and stocking bathrooms and shop, cleaning vehicles, gathering and splitting firewood, etc.
- Record keeping which includes maintaining a work log and providing brief monthly reports.
Required Experience, Skills, and Personal Characteristics
- Ability to accept and benefit from training in maintenance work; follow directions; work cooperatively with others; perform heavy sustained physical work; and use tools,
supplies, and equipment appropriate for the job. - Good written and verbal communication skills. Basic computer skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions, including rough terrain and inclement weather.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
- Experience with and/or willingness to use pesticides for control of plants.
- Botanical knowledge and ability to distinguish non-native from native plants is preferred.
- Experience in park operations, or one year experience in construction, equipment maintenance or operation, building repair, or mechanical trades a plus.
