Environmental Education Internship

Description:
This 9 month position is intended for graduate students, college graduates, or those with intermediate experience. Friends of North Creek Forest is a non-profit organization committed to maintaining and improving the ecological function of North Creek Forest through stewardship, education and conservation in perpetuity. Our education program aims to provide K-12 and public outdoor environmental education programming that enhances our audience's relationship with their environment, so more urban natural areas can be preserved. The environmental education program works with a variety of school and community partners and we anticipate building many new relationships as we continue to grow. The majority of our events will be held in our North Creek Forest, some on school campuses, in classrooms, other parks, and virtually when needed.

Our intern will work with the education manager to conduct school outreach, recruit and supervise interns, spearhead our education roadmap, plan and lead events, and develop intern grant writing skills. In addition they will supervise and participate in education events.

Expectations:

  • Available for in-person weekday events at least 2x a week within 7am - 4pm
  • Attend twice weekly education committee meetings. One is online and one is in person (usually at NCF).
  • Approximately 12 hours per week. This will vary depending on intern's own availability and workload.
  • Complete required readings and assignments.-Conduct school outreach- Assist in designing educational activities with ecological and reciprocal themes.
  • Iroduce deliverables such as lesson plans, curriculum research, grant applications and teaching tools.
  • Assist in field instruction with eventual plans to lead a field activity.-Assist in grant writing process.

Objectives/Learning Goals, Students will be able to:

  • Understand lowland forest ecological restoration practices.
  • Various environmental science practices.
  • Understand the role of community service/service learning in habitat restoration.
  • Think critically and act toward equity in environmental education.
  • Design for diverse ways of knowing and understanding science and the natural world.
  • Understand the intricacies of curriculum development and instruction.- Understand how school outreach is conducted- Increased understanding in how to manage an education program.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in community outreach, environmental justice, habitat restoration, and/or education.
  • Comfortable working within a variety of tech platforms, especially Google Drive.- At least one year experience in related field (education, ecology, etc.).- Position ideal for those post bachelors degree seeking post-graduate degree.

Compensation:

  • Internship expectations are customizable to support school's credit requirements.
  • Pay is starting $18/Hour and every two month will increase by $1/hour to total $20/hour by 4th month. Expected to average 12 hours/ week for 6 Months after start of term.
