Spend a summer at The Nest with the National Loon Center! We’re looking for an enthusiastic summer intern to support our programs dedicated to research, education, and conservation of the Common Loon and its freshwater habitat. You will learn and develop skills in science communication, volunteer engagement, and community science. Work closely with the Science & Stewardship Manager as part of a small, collaborative team where every day brings something new. Join us for an exciting year where the National Loon Center will be breaking ground on our upcoming educational facility at our future campus site. This internship is based out of our informational center, The Nest, in Crosslake, Minnesota.

Qualifications

● Currently enrolled in a 2-4 year degree or will have graduated within two weeks of the start date
● Prior knowledge and passion for the conservation of loons and freshwater lakes
● Currently pursuing or have earned a degree in ecology, biological sciences, environmental education or a related field
● Familiarity with wildlife survey techniques
● Comfortable with public speaking and leading presentations/outreach programs
● Experience or willingness to learn media communication strategies
● Able to work independently or as part of a team
● Must be able to work in-person in Crosslake and travel to surrounding areas
● Must be able to work 40 hours per week (Tuesday-Saturday, approximately 8:30am-4:30pm)

Responsibilities

Community Science

● Engage youth in loon monitoring through the Junior Loon Biologist program
● Record data on loon productivity during on-water educational excursions and dedicated surveys
● Take water clarity measurements and record data at stream sites on the Pine River
● Assist with other research tasks including loon mortality collection/transport

Outreach

● Assist with and lead outreach programs for schools, lake associations, summer camps, environmental clubs, and other community groups
● Guide loon-watching excursions on Cross Lake and Gull Lake
● Support the “Share Our Shoreline” conservation workshop series
● Engage with and educate visitors to The Nest

Events and Communication

● Assist with the planning and development of the Minnesota Loons & Lakes Festival
● Contribute educational content for social media and digital newsletter
● Serve as a point person for volunteers during events and outreach activities

Compensation and Schedule Details
This is a full-time internship that runs for a maximum of 16 weeks from May-August, 2025. Start and end dates dependent on candidate availability. This is a paid internship with compensation of $18/hour at 40 hours per week. The typical work week is Tuesday-Saturday with occasional evening programs.

Ability to Commute or Relocate
Candidates must be able to commute reliably or relocate before beginning employment. A valid driver’s license and vehicle is required. Travel to events and programs will be reimbursed at the federal mileage reimbursement rate.
