Salary Details Pay range: $22.00 - $24.00/hour, and we provide camping, bunk style days-off housing (includes a kitchen, Wi-Fi, showers, storage and laundry), as well as food when on hitch.

As the Trail Crew Leader you will work along the iconic Appalachian Trail and develop trail building and leadership skills. You will build stone steps, waterbars, retaining walls, and other erosion control structures. Advanced training with stone cutting, stonework, rigging systems, and other trail work will be provided. Your work on the beautiful and rugged Appalachian Trail will be enjoyed by thousands of hikers for decades or centuries.

The Crew Leader will train and supervise approximately five crew members (paid members and volunteers during specific weeks) in trail reconstruction and backcountry camping. The Crew Leader will ensure safe and sanitary conditions at camp and work sites, safe transportation, and respond appropriately to emergencies. 

Days off housing will be provided at our new Maine Trail Center, in Skowhegan. Having a personal vehicle for days off is essential as Maine is a rural state with limited public transportation. Sorry, no pets.

Qualifications: 

  • Backcountry backpacking, camping, and cooking experience.
  • One or more seasons in a trail leadership role.
  • Ability to take responsibility for all aspects of a trail crew.
  • Willing to collaborate and communicate regularly with coordinator, supervisors, and partnering organizations.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to keep accurate records, and to report in a timely manner.
  • Ability to teach trail skills and motivate others.
  • Good health, physically fit, and must be able to hike long distances in mountain terrain.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions.
  • Comfortable working without direct supervision.
