SUMMARY OF JOB SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES
The mission of the Cable Natural History Museum (CNHM) is connecting people to Northwoods nature through educational experiences that inspire wonder, discovery and responsibility. The Marketing and Development Manager assists with advancing the CNHM’s mission, vision, and strategic goals through developing positive relationships and engaging a full range of Museum constituents, from first-time visitors, to members, to top supporters with the objective of increasing visitation, affinity, and philanthropic support for CNHM. To this end, the Marketing and Development Manager is responsible for meeting philanthropic goals through individual/corporate giving, major gifts, sponsorships, and maintaining/growing the CNHM’s membership program and volunteer base. The Marketing and Development Manager will strengthen the culture of philanthropy at the CNHM in partnership with the Director, Board, Committees, Staff, museum partners, and community to identify and engage new major gift prospects and create a comprehensive strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation, and retention based on the donor’s giving history and capacity. They will also oversee stewarding the organization’s donor base. The Marketing and Development Manager is also responsible for planning, implementing, overseeing, and assessing the CNHM’s fundraising plans in support of the organization's strategic vision and growth.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Marketing, Public Relations, and Membership (40%)

  • Work with the Director and Marketing Committee on comprehensive marketing and public relations strategies aligned with the CNHM's goals and objectives. This includes identifying target audiences, defining key messaging, and selecting appropriate communication channels.
  • Spearhead the creation of marketing materials for dissemination including press releases, social media posts, website copy, newsletters, and promotional materials. Ensure consistency in messaging and branding across all platforms.
  • Develop promotional marketing materials for events including donor recognition. Utilize various marketing channels to maximize attendance and engagement.
  • Work with the Marketing Committee to identify and implement impactful and cost effective traditional and digital marketing platforms to reach targeted audiences.
  • Direct branding and communication through the Museum’s website.
  • Develop and manage membership programs to attract and retain individual and business donors. This includes creating membership benefits, organizing membership events, and implementing strategies to increase membership enrollment and retention rates.
  • Collaborate with the Education and Curatorial departments to leverage museum programs for marketing strategies that enhance membership cultivation and growth.
  • Spearhead the development of membership materials including brochures and membership cards.
  • Plan and implement the membership drive, direct mail, and email campaigns.
  • Oversee maintenance of membership information and documentation including electronic database, hard copy files, and correspondence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Development (35%)

  • Work with the Director to build and maintain strong relationships with individual donors, foundations, and business/corporate members and sponsors. This involves conducting prospect research, organizing donor cultivation events, and personally engaging with potential supporters.
  • Implement stewardship practices to acknowledge and recognize donors for their contributions. This includes sending thank-you letters, providing donor recognition opportunities, and ensuring transparency in how donations are used to support the museum's programs and initiatives.
  • Identify candidates and cultivate relationships for the CNHM’s White Pine Society, general legacy gifts and Donor Advised Funds.
  • Collaborate with programming, collections, and administration to align development efforts with organizational initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and current donor records and fundraising databases to track donor interactions, gifts, and fundraising performance.
  • Lead efforts to identify, engage, and solicit support from high-net-worth individuals and organizations.
  • Collaborate with the Development Committee to create compelling campaign materials and engagement strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Director to engage the Board of Directors in fundraising activities, leveraging their networks and resources.
  • Identify prospective volunteers for assistance with all museum departments and activities.
  • Work with the Director to develop and maintain an annual budget for development, membership, marketing, and fundraising.
  • Keep current with developments and trends within the field.
  • Maintain relationships, seek out and take advantage of networking and professional development opportunities within the museum/science center field, locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Fundraising (25%)

  • Work with the CNHM Director to build the fundraising capacity of the organization by developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with the museum's mission and goals. This includes identifying funding opportunities, creating fundraising campaigns, and setting financial targets.
  • Strategize with the Director, Board, and Development Committee to draft an annual fundraising plan to secure major gifts, grants and other philanthropic support.
  • Identify grant opportunities from foundations, corporations and government sources and lead proposal development, submission, and award management.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives by coordinating and implementing fundraising events to create engaging and impactful experiences for attendees.
  • Work with CNHM Director on sponsor outreach planning and execution.
  • Identify, and in collaboration with the CNHM Director, foster strategic partnerships with external stakeholders to enhance fundraising opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
  • Three years of professional marketing, development and/or fundraising experience.
  • Experience in an informal educational setting preferred.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Familiarity with donor management databases such as Donorview, Tessitura or Raiser’s Edge.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising judgement, confidentiality, and diplomacy with donors
  • Initiative and ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with management team members and employees, volunteers, vendors, and community partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team as well as independently and be able to perform multiple tasks without close supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, some holidays, and school vacation weeks.
  • An expressed interest in natural history and informal education.

FUNCTIONAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Requires sufficient skills to work in a business environment including organizing, coordinating, daily decision making, analyzing, and interpreting.
  • Requires standing and walking approximately 30% of the time with regular need to perform physical actions that include sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling materials, pulling, carrying, and pushing.
  • Ability to move and manipulate materials and electronic equipment for events, programs and outreach weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to safely navigate through public and private areas of the Cable Natural History Museum properties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Most essential duties are performed in an interactive education center and office environment with exposure to a variety of business equipment and other pertinent materials normally found in this type of work setting.
  • Center facilities may expose incumbent to; high noise levels, temperature changes, a variety of liquids, solids, and gasses used in educational demonstrations, electrical exposure, unpredictable ventilation, dust, and physical obstacles.
  • Work is normally performed in an area of limited privacy.

EMPLOYMENT SCREENING AND COMPLIANCE

  • Individual will be required to pass a background check.

  • Employee must comply with all operational policies, especially those involving the safety of fellow workers, visitors, volunteers, and client/customers.
