Be a central figure in the implementation of Wildlife Program and Agency goals, objectives, and assignments on the Methow Wildlife Area.
 
With sustainability and conservation in mind, you will participate in professional scientific studies using predefined methodologies and criteria, and provide analysis and assessment of data collected to assess impacts.
 
We are seeking a candidate to become familiar with laws, rules, and regulations to make decisions in response to emerging situations on the wildlife area.
 
WHAT TO EXPECT -
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
 
Perform fish and wildlife habitat work through weed control, forestry and farming activities.

  • Plans and implements Integrated Pest Management Program on wildlife area units, including compliance with applicable laws, label restrictions and record keeping associated with chemical applications.
  • Performs, plans and/or assigns habitat maintenance and enhancement activities.
  • Provides support and technical input for projects.
  • Operation of heavy equipment such as snowplows, backhoes, spray trucks, fire engines, excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers, tractors, and associated implements.

Performs field investigations.

  • Compliance with permit, lease, and agreement provisions.
  • Surveying of emerging issues (user conflicts, habitat damage, facility, and infrastructure condition, etc.)
  • Boundary and/or interior fence condition (build, maintain).
  • Follow-up on contractual/project deliverables.
  • Postings and notifications regarding invasive species.

Recreation Management.

  • Post signs and notices directing and informing the public.
  • Maintains Shooting range for public use.
  • Assists with coordinating ADA hunt opportunities.

 Facilities infrastructure and equipment management.

  • Identify deficiencies in facilities, infrastructure and equipment and recommends solutions.
  • Assist manager in tracking inventoried items.
  • Develops or assists in the development of capital improvement projects.
  • Repairs and maintains and ensures the safety and proper working order of capital facilities and equipment.

Community and stakeholder outreach and involvement.

  • Collaborates with other WDFW staff, tribes, federal, state, local agencies, and non-governmental organizations as well as neighboring landowners on habitat and related land management projects and issues.
  • Spearheads, leads, trains, and supervises volunteers and volunteer projects.
  • Answers or finds answers to public inquiries.

Supervision and administration.

  • Assists in recruiting and coordinating in hiring of staff. Trains, supervises, and evaluates staff performance. Directs work of seasonal or permanent staff on wildlife area.
  • Writing or the assisting in the development of grants.
  • Prepare routine reports on wildlife area activities.
  • Purchase materials supplies and equipment.

Work setting: Field 70%, Office 30%. In wetlands or upland shrub steppe/forest habitats, operating tractors, heavy equipment, pickups, ATV’s, boats, towing trailers, herbicide application equipment. Transporting equipment and supplies by foot up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain in all weather conditions, and up to 100 pounds by vehicle. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

Schedule: 4 days per week, 10 hours per day. Depending on workload and season, incumbent may be required to work weekends and outside of the normal schedule.

Travel requirements: Daily travel to field sites.  Occasional overnight travel for training, conferences, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or closely related field.
 
And
 
One (1) year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research.
 
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in uneven and rocky terrain.
 
Please note:  Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
 
License:  Valid driver’s license.
 
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Pesticide applicators license (required within the first 6 months of employment).
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group PM-310-1 Red Card certified (Firefighter2) (required within the first 12 months of employment).
  • First Aid and CPR certified (required within the first 6 months of employment).
  • Wilderness first aid (required within the first 6 months of employment).
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) may be required in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
Experience with:

  • Monitoring vegetation, wildlife populations and recreational use.
  • Working on management and enhancement of dry forest, shrub steppe, and riparian plant communities.
  • Operating motor vehicles, ATVs, herbicide application equipment, farm, and construction equipment.
  • Heavy equipment and farm equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Computers and other communication technology.
  • Agriculture and livestock production systems, including fence repair and construction.
  • ESRI ArcMap (GIS mapping systems) and GPS to gather information and generate maps.
  • Grant and technical writing. 

Currently certified with:

  • Commercial Driver’s License.
  • WSDA pesticide applicators license and experience in the use and application of herbicides.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group PM-310-1 Red Card certified (Firefighter2).
