Summary of Position:

The Town of York is seeking responsible Park Rangers to perform a variety of park operational activities. Responsibilities include regulating access fee compliance, general custodial and park maintenance operations, visitor orientation and guidance for the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program, along with various trail and habitat work. Park Rangers are the first point of contact, conducting routine checks, interacting with visitors, and promoting safe, responsible access to the area.

Specific tasks include:

Access fee enforcement: Conducts regular patrols of parking areas, summit park and trails to ensure public safety and resource protection; and reporting any irregular activity or misuse. Utilize issued hand-held device to track access and fees received, issuing citations or warnings with any violation of regulations.

Custodial and park maintenance operations: cleaning and stocking park restrooms, trash and litter pick-up, landscaping work to include raking, spreading gravel, weeding, mulching, trimming, etc.; scraping and painting surfaces as directed; assisting in the repairing and maintenance of facilities, structures, and equipment; operating such equipment as required; assisting with prompt opening and closing of park, gates, and restrooms. 

Visitor orientation and guidance: providing excellent visitor service by interacting with members of the public in a courteous, tactful, and fair manner; answering questions related to park rules and regulations, resource protections, and recreational use of the area; staffing the summit Learning Lodge; conducting visitor-use surveys; replacing notices and stocking trail box brochures.

Trail remediation and habitat restoration: rerouting or closing unsustainable trails; building/repairing water bars, bridges, boardwalks, and drainage ditches; monitoring trail conditions; keeping trails clear of fallen trees and branches. Brush cutting and chipping to maintain early successional/shrubland habitat; caring for native vegetation; removing invasive plants; etc.

Entrance Requirements:

  • A friendly, articulate, and outgoing personality, especially with the public.
  • Ability to work independently, with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to explain our work to a variety of people including outdoor enthusiasts, tourists, neighbors, and school groups.
  • Willingness to learn park rules and regulations.
  • Capable of working long hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Ability to follow instructions, improvise when needed and report problems.
  • Moderate physical effort required involving extended periods of standing/walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to operate telephone, computer, basic construction, and trail maintenance tools.
  • Vision and hearing adequate to perform the essential function of the job are required.
  • Capable of operating maintenance equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to operate a standard non CDL vehicle.
  • Must posses a valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in diverse types of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to tolerate ticks, black flies, mosquitoes, wasps, dirt and sweat.
  • Demonstrated previous outdoor work and people skills a plus.

Annual Schedule and Compensation: Part-time or full-time positions available; will include mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends. Employment dates are April 1st through mid-November.  These positions are not eligible for benefits. Starting wage is $17/hour.
