If you have a passion for marine fisheries management and an interest in working with commercial fishers to collect and analyze data on the beautiful coast of Oregon, then this position may be for you! Initial interviews are anticipated to be held via Teams video conference.
What you will do:
• Receive and code commercial nearshore fishing vessel logbooks from vessel skippers or other personnel, enter logbook data into database. Error check logbooks and data through analysis of the information. Investigate discrepancies by interviewing vessel and processor plant personnel as needed. Contact nearshore and black/blue rockfish permit holders to obtain late logbooks and coach fishers in the correct way to fill out the logbook per regulations. Compile compliance reports and disseminate to fishers and Oregon State Police for possible enforcement action.
• Analyze data, write reports, and conduct evaluations for direct application in commercial fishery management. Produce charts and graphs from data for reports and presentations. Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of marine finfish species data for use in fishery management. Prepare written reports.
• Train, coordinate and oversee the work of Oregon’s albacore samplers. Sample Oregon’s commercial albacore fishery, collect fishing trip data, and examine and measure samples of vessels’ albacore catch. Enter and error check catch data and sample data for Oregon’s albacore sampling program. Prepare monthly albacore sampling reports and send to other agencies. Act as liaison between ODFW and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for albacore fishery issues including sampling questions, problems, and requests. Answer albacore questions from industry, public, and media.

Working Conditions
• Time will be split between office and field work. Frequent (daily or almost daily) visits to docks at irregular hours which at times involves exposure to inclement weather. Sampling is done daily during albacore season (approximately July-October) in commercial fish processing plants around moving equipment such as forklifts; floors are often wet and may be slippery. Sampling is sometimes done inside cold storage rooms. Lifting fish often weighing 15 to 25 pounds is required. Monthly trips via car to attend meetings in distant ports, and daily use of vehicle. Occasional work on vessels at sea where difficult ocean conditions may occur. Office work involves entering data, analyzing data and writing daily reports.
• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day.
