The Marine Resources Program of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is hiring for hiring for one permanent, full-time position located in Newport, Oregon.

What you will do:

You will be responsible for specific statewide program level resource policy, management and assessment for shellfish resources, shellfish fisheries, and estuary habitat. You will supervise shellfish staff in developing statewide polices and regulations related to our shellfish resources, provide public education and partnership with external partners, and provide input into environmental review issues as needed.

What we are looking for:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of biological/ecological/oceanographic experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or marine program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological/oceanographic coursework.

  • A Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

  • A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Biological Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Management/Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

Desired Attributes:

  • Experience effectively communicating and collaborating with and providing advice to public agencies, private or public landowners, or non-governmental organizations on marine shellfish conservation activities
  • Experience developing publications, presenting, and speaking to agency staff, tribes, conservation groups and/or industry groups
  • Experience reviewing, writing, and/or implementing marine shellfish-related plans and reports (e.g., fishery management plans, commission reports, etc.)
  • Experience in using applied research for developing management recommendations
  • Experience planning, directing and coordinating interdisciplinary teams.
