Natural Resource Specialist

Position Description: 

The Natural Resource Specialist will be a driving force in a dedicated, multi-stakeholder team tackling critical environmental challenges within the Plumas and Lassen National Forests. Job Duties: 

The selected candidate will be tasked with analyzing the potential impacts of fuels reduction and forest health initiatives proposed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and other collaborative partners. This role involves close collaboration with USFS staff to develop and document Environmental Analyses (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), or Categorical Exclusions (CEs) in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The ideal candidate will bring a specialized area of expertise (e.g., wildlife, silviculture, fire and fuels) that complements the existing capabilities of Sierra Institute staff and positions them to lead analysis in a specific resource area.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conducting independent field visits to collect data and evaluate project sites.
• Creating accurate, detailed maps to illustrate project areas and highlight key resources.
• Collaborating with specialists, staff, and project partners to prepare clear and technically robust environmental analysis reports.
• Working closely with USFS experts to review data, evaluate potential environmental impacts, and address public feedback.
• Contributing to interdisciplinary team meetings to define project objectives, timelines, and deliverables.
• Assisting with public meetings and presentations, providing support as needed. 

Desired Qualifications (Entry Level): 

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (natural resources, forestry, wildlife biology, etc.). 
• Demonstrated technical writing skills for natural resource management. 
• Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). 
• Basic understanding of NEPA processes and requirements. 
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. 
• Detail-oriented and capable of producing accurate project notes. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
• A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. 
• Experience living and/or working in rural settings and a genuine interest in land management and collaborative landscape projects.

Desired Qualifications (Mid Level): 

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., natural resources, forestry, wildlife biology), or equivalent professional experience.
• 3-5 years of professional experience in natural resource management, environmental analysis, or a similar field.
• Demonstrated expertise in environmental analysis compliant with NEPA, including the preparation of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA), and Categorical Exclusions (CEs).
• Advanced proficiency in GIS and mapping software for spatial analysis, data management, and the creation of clear, visually engaging project maps.
• Solid understanding of ecological processes and resource management techniques, with expertise in one or more areas such as wildlife, silviculture, fire management, or fuels reduction.
• Proven experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including the U.S. Forest Service, private landowners, and other federal or state agencies, during both the planning and implementation phases of projects.
• Ability to independently lead field data collection, organize assessments, and evaluate the environmental impacts of land management activities.
• A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation, with flexibility to travel to field sites as needed.
• Experience working in rural or remote environments and a deep commitment to land stewardship and collaborative natural resource management. 

Working Conditions: 

• Predominantly office-based role, involving regular computer use.
• Periodic fieldwork, primarily during the summer and fall seasons.
• Occasional travel (up to 20%) for meetings, site visits, and workshops, with rare overnight stays (typically less than one night per month).
• Standard office hours (7:30 AM – 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday), with flexibility to accommodate fieldwork and project requirements. 

Compensation & Benefits: 

• Entry-Level: $55,000 - $62,000 | Mid-Level: $62,000 - $70,000
