DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will work under the direction of the Environmental Program Specialist (Restoration Ecologist) with additional guidance from other Regional Environmental Stewardship program staff, to assist the Project Manager with habitat restoration project planning and coordination at the Big Bend Preserve (Moreau Lake State Park) in Saratoga County (Saratoga-Capital District Region). Duties may include, but are not limited to: habitat, plant and wildlife surveys and monitoring; invasive species surveys & management utilizing mechanical (hand and power tools) and chemical (herbicide) control; participation in prescribed burns; assistance with contractor oversight; database management and report preparation; environmental education and outreach; volunteer coordination; seasonal employee supervision and routine site maintenance. Other stewardship duties to be determined at the discretion of the Environmental Stewardship team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A strong understanding of the ecology of upstate New York
  • At least one year of experience conducting ecological field surveys, including vegetation and wildlife surveys
  • At least two years of experience conducting invasive species identification and management
  • Wildlands Firefighter Certification (or willingness to become certified)
  • Pesticide Applicator or Technician Certification (or willingness to become certified)
  • Experience with or willingness to learn the safe operation of mechanical tools such as mowers, skid steers, chainsaws, brush cutters, etc.
  • A working knowledge of GPS and GIS technology, including ArcGIS/Arc Pro, Field Maps, Survey 123 and iMap Invasives
  • Experience supervising field staff and volunteers
  • Excellent organizational skills in office and field settings
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work and maintain a good attitude while performing physical tasks in a variety of conditions
  • Ability to excel in team and individual settings
  • Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
