Job Description:
Enthusiastic educator to work in our summer nature camp program. The Nature Camp Teacher Naturalist is the lead teacher for groups of children exploring the outdoors. They will develop and conduct environmental education programs as well as oversee group dynamics and safety.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and conduct programs with crafts, activities and games that have a strong focus on connecting children with nature and respect for the natural world.
- Organize and supervise children including to facilitate group management and safety.
- Participate in the daily setup and breakdown of all program aspects including all cleaning procedures related to health and safety protocols.
- Maintain lesson plans, educational materials, and all other related programming information as required.
- Oversee and actively engage youth counselors and/or counselors in training.
- Help in the care, feeding, and wellbeing of live animals that are presented for educational purposes.
Other
- Attend mandatory camp orientation and training.
- Participate with staff and volunteers to adopt a team approach towards daily operations.
- Assume additional responsibilities as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
- A. or B.S. in the sciences or education, preferred.
- Minimum two years’ experience working with children in formal/non-formal settings.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of the natural world.
- Strong organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback.
- Motivated self-starter able to work independently as well as collaborate with other staff.
- Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to walk on uneven surfaces such as nature trails, shallow water, or sand.
- Ability to lift and move boxes, tables, chairs and discovery equipment (up to 50 lbs.) as part of class set up or program delivery.
- Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, background check and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ.
