The Northern Operations Manager is a vital role within the Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC) program dedicated to advancing our mission of environmental stewardship and community service.
This role, based at our Mt. Rose field office - Headquarters in Reno, Nevada, is central to advancing our mission alongside community and agency partners on national parks, forests, and public lands. The Manager will play a pivotal leadership role, guiding our Nevada Conservation Corps’ projects through northern Nevada and the Sierra Nevada in California. Responsibilities include forging conservation projects with agency partners, overseeing project execution, and setting performance benchmarks. The role demands managing both the logistical and administrative aspects of field operations, including supervision of field staff and AmeriCorps members. Our projects range from trail maintenance and habitat restoration to reduction of hazard fuels, often in remote locations, prioritizing safety and quality assurance. These projects are often executed in remote locations over multiple days, necessitating stringent safety protocols. The ideal candidate will bring strong organizational, communicative, and problem-solving abilities, contributing to professional development within the institute.
Essential Job Functions may include the following or other duties as assigned:
- Field Operations Oversight: Manage planning for NCC based in Reno, NV, including project scheduling.
- Crew Supervision: Direct supervision, management, and training of NCC field crews. Coordinate, conduct and support Crew Orientations and contribute to the Leadership Development Program.
- Project Management and Documentation: Ensure meticulous organization of projects, including regular updates to the scope of work and comprehensive reporting on outputs and outcomes at the project's conclusion.
- Site Visits and Training: Facilitate project site visits as needed and provide in-field training to crews.
- Agency and Partner Engagement: Ensure continuous dialogue with agencies and partners to maintain high standards of quality assurance, achieve mutual satisfaction, and foster a positive experience for AmeriCorps members.
- Partnership Development and Collaboration: Sustain existing partnerships while cultivating new ones, and respond adeptly to Requests for Proposals from prospective partners.
- Financial Monitoring and Funding Opportunities: Support the tracking of project funding agreements to ensure funds are available and appropriately spent and allocated. Identify and secure project funding through grant research and application.
- Recruitment and Compliance: Support recruitment efforts and ensure adherence to NCC and AmeriCorps Compliance standards.
- Communication Skills: Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication abilities.
- Safety Reporting: Manage paperwork for safety monitoring, progress reports, vehicle mileage, and other field logs.
- Safety Communication: Support field crews with daily safety check-ins and effective communication.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks to the organization’s people, property, finances, goodwill, and image.
- Field Safety: Work hands-on in various environments with a safety-first approach.
- Equipment and Supply Management: Perform checks and inventories, manage procurement, and track equipment and supplies.
- Interdepartmental Coordination: Collaborate with GBI and NCC staff to address crew needs and field issues.
- Facility Maintenance: Assist in the upkeep of GBI’s Mt Rose Office and Las Vegas field station.
- Vehicle Management: Support program staff with vehicle assignments, availability, and tracking.
- Mission Promotion: Advocate GBI and NCC mission and objectives to field teams and partners.
Requirements/Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Management, Conservation Leadership, Environmental Science, Education, or equivalent professional experience (3) three years.
- Obtain a Valid CA/NV Pesticide Applicator License or certification within the first six months of employment; Exam fees paid by GBI, with subsequent salary increase upon certification.
- Flexibility for both office and fieldwork, including readiness for multi-day field assignments as required.
- Must pass federal agency security background checks (FBI criminal, National Sex Offender Public Registry, Department of Interior Security Screening).
- Proficiency in computer use, notably Google and Microsoft Office Suites.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, ensuring clear and composed interactions throughout all levels of management and effective engagement with diverse groups, both in written and verbal formats.
- Skill in managing tasks within tight deadlines, competing priorities, and adapting to a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills, self-motivation, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

LOCATION
Based at GBI offices in Reno, NV The “Biggest Little City in the World” the greater Reno-Sparks metropolitan area has a population of over 435,000. The city is a high desert landscape ~4,500 feet above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains along the Truckee River, as it flows from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Weather is mild, but with distinct four seasons. Reno offers easy access to world-class outdoor recreation including driving distance to Yosemite and Death Valley National Parks, the Pacific Ocean, and California redwood forests. Closer to home, Nevada offers more natural hot springs than any other state in the country, over 150 named mountain ranges, and 30 peaks over 11,000 feet. Recreation and entertainment includes eight major ski resorts in proximity to the Reno-Tahoe airport; fishing and boating on Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River, and Pyramid Lake; cultural festivals throughout the summer along the banks of the Truckee River; a thriving food scene and more.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary range is $27.70 to $30.08 hourly, DOE. In addition to a competitive base salary, this full-time, onsite position includes comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as mental health support resources, 401(k) retirement savings with up to 4% GBI match, competitive PTO accrual, paid holidays (10 per year), and family leave. Total compensation package is $64,806 - $$69,934 per year, DOE.
