WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
Indigenous people and communities have been the stewards of Nevada's landscapes since time immemorial and have perspectives and knowledge about the plants of the Great Basin that can help restoration practitioners from all backgrounds be more successful in their work. Several studies have also shown that there is an overwhelming need for additional plant materials for restoration and this opportunity may help create additional stable revenue streams for interested tribal groups and communities. Several tribal organizations are already growing plant materials for restoration purposes, either specifically for use on tribal lands, or for use in other settings, and some Nevada tribes have asked for support in securing plant materials. By listening to tribes, indigenous communities, and individuals across the state, the Restoration Tribal Liaison will build on this basic understanding to develop an overview of the restoration needs and interests from this important set of perspectives.
The Restoration Tribal Liaison position will then bring needed capacity to help transfer knowledge from tribal perspectives to the restoration practitioner community and vice-versa, serve as a catalyst for tribal groups interested in entering the plant materials market, and identify and respond to plant materials needs for tribal restoration projects. Tribal members have also expressed an interest in exploring the related issue of food sovereignty, and the Restoration Tribal Liaison will help identify the linkages between restoration, healthy ecosystems, and food sovereignty, and further support Tribes on this topic.
