One Hundred Miles is seeking a North Coast Advocate (NCA) who will be responsible for engaging with residents and partner groups in Chatham, Bryan, and Effingham Counties. Guided by our strategic plan and solutions that will accommodate population growth, address sea level rise, and grow our economy. The NCA mobilizes community members to combat land use changes, plans, and policies that are damaging to our natural resources, culture, and quality of life for all residents, as well as promoting programs and investments that will build a more resilient North Coast.

One Hundred Miles (OHM) protects Georgia's 100-mile coast through advocacy, education, and community engagement. We are inclusive of all friends and residents of Georgia's coast. We collaborate with conventional and unconventional allies and celebrate our coast and the stories of the people working to protect it. OHM is a trusted resource and conservation leader across our coast and throughout the country.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing campaigns around issues with clear goals and wins, executing effective strategies and tactics, and building a strong base of active volunteers and community leaders.
  • Implement organizing strategies, tactics, and tools to increase engagement with our target communities and leaders.
  • Attend city and county meetings (in the evenings) to stay updated on local government decisions affecting the natural and built environment in North Coast counties.
  • Investigate land development and management proposals, analyze impacts to resources and quality of life, and create campaigns that may eliminate or reduce negative impacts.
  • Establish campaign goals consistent with organizational priorities. Track progress and produce accurate reports to track progress.
  • Work with the communications team to grow the number and quality of contacts in our action database, helping to increase our overall audience size and expand our reach within our target audience.
  • Work with the communications team to implement creative art and storytelling tactics into organizing and campaign efforts.
  • Work closely with the education team to identify information gaps and educational programs to foster deeper engagement in organizational priorities.
  • Build coalitions and establish effective partnerships with local organizations (e.g., neighborhood groups, faith-based groups, environmental justice groups, etc.).
  • Work with the CEO and organization leadership to produce grant applications and reports, cultivate donors and foundations, and participate in fundraising activities as needed to increase financial resources for organizing programs and campaigns.

Qualifications

  • Ability to quickly learn OHM’s programs, campaigns, and priority issues to manage and communicate about our campaigns effectively.
  • Experience working in community, environmental, or other progressive organizing, electoral, or movement-building efforts. The ideal candidate must have experience in campaigns focused on mobilizing people, especially communities of color, and working within coalitions and partnerships.
  • Excellent verbal, reading, and writing skills are critical for this position.
  • Demonstrates a high propensity for reading, understanding, and analyzing information. The NCA will receive a large volume of written materials, and they will frequently have to thoroughly review and analyze the data to determine our organizing goals, strategies, objectives, and tactics.
  • Must appreciate and be familiar with the uniqueness of Georgia's coastal environment and communities.
  • Be comfortable engaging people with various views and have the ability to learn and use those cultural and community norms to move people to action.
  • A proven track record of working with and building relationships with various ethnicities is required.
  • Must have the confidence and be committed to advancing equity and inclusion related to environmental justice.

This position will be based in Savannah, GA. However, it will require the employee to regularly travel to advocate across the coast, particularly in Chatham, Bryan, and Effingham Counties, to OHM’s Brunswick office, and occasionally to other parts of the state as needed.
