JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

An Outdoor-Education Programs Coordinator plans, coordinates, and conducts the day-trip and outdoor-education programs for elementary and secondary school students at an outdoor-education center or related venue, and may manage the operation of a center on weekends.

Some typical duties this position is responsible for may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans and coordinates specialized instructional, natural science, and outdoor activities for elementary and secondary school students by conducting the day-trip and outdoor-education programs at an outdoor-education center or related venue.
  • Conducts group nature hikes, tours, campfire programs, and presents ecological, environmental, and nature activities to students.
  • Develops and presents in-service training programs for staff, and assists in conducting orientation programs for students, new employees, and school sponsors.
  • Provides informational meetings for school site administrators, teachers, and parents about the outdoor-education and day-trip programs.
  • Assists the Outdoor Education Center Manager/Assistant Manager with completing required forms and reports, including time reports, program evaluation forms, food service reports, accidents, incidents, and illness reports.
  • Coordinates food service programs for day-trips.
  • Assists in conducting emergency drills and inspecting cabins and grounds for hazardous conditions.
  • Provides basic first aid, and seeks medical aid for students, when necessary.
  • Acts as a lifeguard during recreational swimming periods.
  • Drives a truck to transport luggage, food, supplies, and other items.
  • Supports various maintenance activities, including minor repair of instructional tools, brush clearing, inventory, and other related activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in the natural sciences that included courses in the natural resources and environment.

  • Additional experience conducting outdoor-education programs may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, provided that the requirement of a high school diploma or equivalent is met.

EXPERIENCE:

One year of experience developing or conducting outdoor or environmental education programs.

SPECIAL:

Eligible candidates must be a minimum of twenty-five (25) years of age by date of appointment. (California Administrative Code, Title 17, Section 30751)

A First-Aid Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.

A CPR Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.

A Lifeguarding Certificate issued by the American Red Cross must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for the Outdoor-Education Programs Coordinator position would possess:

  • Experience planning, organizing, and leading outdoor education programs
  • Knowledge of ensuring student safety and engagement in activities (e.g., ecological programs, nature hikes, campfire sessions)
  • Skills in coordinating logistics, including food services and transportation
  • Ability to handle emergencies calmly and efficiently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong teamwork skills to support staff and student learning
