Purpose of Position

To oversee and implement Nature for All’s Outdoor Equity Program in South Gate; fostering community engagement, environmental awareness, access to natural spaces, and outdoor leadership skills. Ensure impactful delivery of activities and alignment with grant and organizational goals to build environmental stewardship and advocacy among diverse populations.

Position Goals & Objectives

  • Community Relationships: Cultivate genuine and long-lasting relationships with the Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) community and local partners to create a robust network of support for community members.
  • Participant Impact: Engage participants over the remaining two years of the grant, with a focus on youth while also including adults. Ensure meaningful experiences for participants through workshops, leadership programs, and nature trips that promote environmental awareness, skill-building, and advocacy.
  • Program Impact and Improvement: Develop and sustain effective tools and processes to measure the positive impact of all program activities. Ensure continuous program improvement by analyzing feedback and outcomes to build the best models and create meaningful, lasting benefits for community members.
  • Grant Compliance: Ensure 100% compliance with deliverables, including maintaining digital program documentation, templates, curriculum, progress reports, and budget accuracy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management and Oversight:

  • Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and program implementation of the Outdoor Equity Program.
  • Supervise and work closely with a Program Coordinator. Provide ongoing support, training, task assignments, performance evaluations, and constructive feedback to ensure the coordinator’s success and professional growth.
  • Coordinate logistics for activities, including transportation, materials, and partnerships with local organizations.
  • Implement environmental workshops, nature trips, and leadership programs with measurable impacts in individual participant growth.
  • Responsible for all aspects of program evaluation, ensuring the use of proper evaluation tools to analyze program, curriculum, and staff effectiveness.
  • Implement changes to the program, including curriculum and other improvements needed to ensure the program is effective and impactful for participants.
  • Ensure all programming includes effective risk management to keep all participants and staff safe.
  • Ensure meticulous preparation and submission of participant engagement reports, progress reports, final reports, financial reports, and other documentation required by grantors.
  • Other duties as assigned related to the organization's mission and programs.

Community Engagement:

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with community members, community groups, schools, partners, colleagues, and funders to enhance program visibility and impact.
  • Engage actively in public speaking and in person community outreach efforts to promote program objectives and recruit participants, embodying the organization's mission in all interactions.
  • Conduct outreach efforts to recruit participants, focusing on underrepresented groups and multi-generational families.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Outdoor Equity Program, presenting its mission and long-term benefits to stakeholders and the community.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

  • A commitment to Nature for All’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Education, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Significant work experience in environmental education, outdoor access, ecology, conservation, environmental justice, or other related fields.
  • The ability to independently manage all aspects of program implementation, including administrative responsibilities such as tracking receipts, preparing reports, maintaining accurate documentation, and adhering to grant requirements.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience in managing and supervising staff, with a strong ability to motivate, guide, and develop teams.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, develop curricula, and implement scalable programs.
  • Effective communication skills, encompassing verbal and written mediums, essential for clear, concise, and impactful exchanges.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with diverse populations, including youth, families, and community leaders.
  • Strong skills in conflict resolution, able to navigate and mediate disputes effectively in a professional setting.
  • Experience facilitating effective training and workshops for diverse audiences.

Preferred:

  • Strong experience in environmental education curriculum development.
  • Certified California Naturalist or Climate Steward.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide or Certified Interpretive Guide Trainer.
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA), Wilderness First Responder (WFR), or advanced medical training.
  • Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer.
  • Knowledge of California cultural & tribal history including, but not limited to Tongva, Gabrielino, Kizh, Chumash, Tataviam history.
  • Experience in grant management, particularly in environmental or community-based programs.

Program Activities

Program activities will include environmental/nature workshops, youth leadership development programs, day hikes, and overnight trips.

Position Performance Evaluation

  • Continuous assessment of the effectiveness in executing program initiatives, focusing on achieving specific defined program outcomes and meeting participant engagement goals.
  • Success is measured by meeting or exceeding specific grant targets and maintaining high operational efficiency within program execution.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • This role involves a combination of remote-based administrative work and field activities and meetings, requiring flexibility and adaptability. 
  • The physical ability to participate in outdoor activities such as hikes in nature, overnight camping trips, and lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and some overnights is required. Travel will be required within the SELA region and other parts of Los Angeles County. 
  • This is a hybrid position with expectations for in-person activities and meetings.
