Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC) is a conservation organization based in Machias, ME, and serving all of coastal Washington County. We protect and manage more than 7,000 acres, 72 miles of shoreline, 30 miles of hiking trails, six water-access campsites, and several points of public access. DCC conserves essential ecological habitats, engages the local community, and fosters an environment where wildlife and people thrive in coastal Washington County, Maine.
Outreach Director Position Description
The Outreach Director (OD) supports DCC membership, development, marketing, and communication needs of the organization. The OD also develops effective outreach and environmental education programs and activities in support of the organization’s mission.
The OD reports to the Executive Director. The position is an exempt, full-time, salaried position, including some required evening and weekend work. The employee works with the Executive Director, the Outreach and Education Committee, the Development Committee, and the DCC Board of Directors to engage residents, connect people to conserved lands, seek new fundraising opportunities and other ways to provide benefits to the area and the organization.
Basic Responsibilities
Development and Fundraising Coordination (20%)
- Serves as a staff liaison to the Development Committee; provides logistical support to meetings
- Collaborates with the Development Committee to create and implement an annual development plan:
- Supports and coordinates fundraising activities and campaigns
- Supports and coordinates special donor recognition events and membership drives
- Supports the Community Partners in Conservation Program; maintains relationships with business sponsors, organizes annual recruitment efforts, appreciation, and sponsorships
- Assists the ED and Administration Manager with coordinating the annual appeal and mailing
- Develops additional online annual giving appeals annually (ex: Giving Tuesday)
- Researches and develops new grant opportunities for the organization
- Provides grant writing support to the Executive Director and organization as needed
- Provides confidential donor research and project support to the Executive Director and Board of Directors including, but not limited to producing reports for board meetings, reports, special mailings, and other tasks in pursuit of the organization’s mission
- Coordinates with the Executive Director any necessary documentation for annual audit
Event and Outreach Management
Community Events and Programs (30%)
- Sets annual calendar of community events; coordinating event logistics
- Leads events or coordinates facilitators when needed
- Manages event registration, participants, and volunteers
- Serve as staff liaison to the Outreach and Education Committee (O&E Committee); provides logistical support to meetings
- Oversees the planning and execution of annual events; including the Annual Meeting, in coordination with the O&E Committee
- Prepares event budgets and develops an annual budget for planned programming
- Creates and manages publicity for events through email, social media, press releases, etc.
Environmental Education (10%)
- Oversees DCC’s environmental education programming with support from the O&E Committee
- Coordinates and organizes requests for field trips and lessons on DCC preserves
- Develops and runs child-focused camps (typically over school breaks: winter, spring, summer)
- Collaborates with other nonprofits to deliver additional youth-focused programming
Communications and Marketing (30%)
- Works the Development Committee, O&E Committee, Board of Directors, and staff to develop and implement strategic communications and marketing plans
- Prepares and distributes regular communications to the DCC members
- Develops and coordinates the biannual newsletter and mailing
- Develops and coordinates e-blast mailings monthly
- Prepares and distributes press releases and other information to the media
- Delivers presentations to other organizations and agencies or public groups when appropriate
- Participates in outreach events such as business fairs, workshops, partner programs, etc.
- Maintains DCC’s website and DCC information on other online sites
- Manages DCC social media and develops new and exciting content for social media outreach
- Organizes and manages all visitor displays, promotional, and printed materials
Office Administrative (10%)
- Manages special event requests and permits on DCC properties as needed
- Helps greet visitors to the office and provides requested information
- Supports the Executive Director and Board of Directors in the maintenance of organization policies, procedures, and related recordkeeping
- Prepares reports on outcomes of events, programming, campaigns (etc.)
- Tracks mileage, expenses, comp-time, and PTO time accurately
- Participates in intern management and supervision as needed
- Assists in coordinating volunteer management, time tracking, training, etc.
- Assists in other related aspects of DCC’s operations as needed
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and commensurate experience with the needs of the position
- Strong and independent work ethic
- Motivation to inspire a love of the natural world in others in support of DCC’s mission
- Well-organized work style and capability to conduct multiple tasks concurrently and meet deadlines
- Experience with computer software, including MS Office, WordPress, Constant Contact, Little Green Light, QuickBooks, and others
- Experience managing social media content on multiple platforms for a small business or organization
- Experience with graphic design to create effective posters and outreach materials
- Initiative in recognizing needs for the efficient and effective operation of the organization
- Event management and excellent public speaking skills
- Working knowledge of conservation issues important to the mission of DCC
- Valid vehicle driver’s license and personal vehicle with proof of insurance
- Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification, or ability to obtain
- Registered Maine Guide licensure preferred
- Ability to lead hikes and paddles in varying terrain and weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.
Compensation
DCC offers competitive compensation, including paid federal holidays, accruing paid vacation and health time, and 100% employer-paid health insurance for the employee. Salary will range between $48,000 – $54,000, commensurate with experience.
