Position Overview

Chikaming Open Lands, a land trust working in Berrien County, Michigan, seeks a summer Outreach Intern. The Intern is responsible for assisting staff with the planning and implementation of outreach and education programs. The Intern may also participate in communications and marketing activities as needed. The position will be supervised by the Education and Outreach Coordinator.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • #10Trail Challenge Event:  Assist in the creation and management of marketing and communications related to the #10Trail Challenge, include social media, digital content, and print materials. Track participants in the event, including registrations, social media posts, and prizes for participants. Assist with installation and removal of “selfie stations” and special props for weekend themes. Manage pool of volunteers assisting with these tasks.
  • Education and Outreach:  Assist staff with planning and implementing educational programs and activities for youth and adults. 

Ancillary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communications and Marketing:  Assist with management of COL’s website, social media platforms, and other content. Assist with other marketing and communications activities, as needed.
  • General Administration:  Manage paper and electronic files and databases. Provide general clerical and administrative support, and other duties as assigned by the Education and Outreach Coordinator or Executive Director.

Qualifications

The successful applicant shall be a college undergraduate (an upperclassmen in high school may also be considered) with an interest in communications, marketing, environmental education, biological sciences, conservation, or related field(s). Applicant must be a self-starter with the ability to collaborate with a team and interact with a wide variety of audiences. Strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal/communication skills are mandatory. Requires proficient computer skills and knowledge of web/social media content management. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required. Ability to work in an office environment and in an outdoor field environment is necessary. Must possess a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and the ability to use a personal, insured vehicle for work. Passion for land conservation is essential.

Employment Terms

The position, located in Berrien County, Michigan is a part-time, seasonal, hourly position with an expected starting wage of $15-18 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. The anticipated term of employment is approximately 30-35 hours per week for 12 weeks (June – August), with flexible start and end dates. Typical working hours are 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required.
