Overnight Camps Program Coordinator

The Summer Camp Program Coordinator is the inspirational staff leader, organizational mastermind, and purveyor of all things camp. They are primarily responsible for the safe and effective execution of educational and recreational programming for Mountaineers Seattle Overnight Camps. They will work collaboratively with other camp staff to create an inclusive and welcoming camp environment. This includes being a leader to all camp staff, enthusiastically facilitating large group programs and activities, overseeing lodge logistics such as meal preparation and clean up, and assisting the Camp Director in numerous aspects of camp. Mountaineers lodge camps run weekly from the end of June through the end of August at The Mountaineers Stevens Lodge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee, organize, and support programmatic elements of camp such as group activities, waterfront supervision, climbing instruction, group management on the trail, meal preparation and clean-up, and general group facilitation.
  • Create a positive, enthusiastic, supportive, and professional environment for staff and campers.
  • Enthusiastically and confidently provide outdoor instruction for campers (i.e. climbing, hiking, swimming, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of each week of camp including grocery runs, inventory, and curriculum and activity planning.
  • Maintain daily schedule and check-ins with staff and campers.
  • Support training of staff in program delivery and curriculum.
  • Act as point of contact person for staff.
  • Alongside the Overnight Camps Associate Manager, act as the “face of camp” at all times, including:
  • Facilitating camper arrival and check out
  • Running activities daily
  • Running Family Friday
  • Providing a leadership presence throughout the camp day
  • Providing excellent customer service to camp families
  • Provide leadership in the following areas in the absence of the camp director
  • Check-in and check-out
  • Parent communication
  • Staff debriefs and check-ins
  • Lead and assist in emergency situations.
  • Ensure The Mountaineers youth policies and procedures are followed and adhered to at all times.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 21.
  • Cultural humility and desire to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working with youth
  • Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van
  • Ability to reside overnight at Mountaineers’ Stevens Lodge during camp weeks
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must have (and maintain) an acceptable driving record to drive Mountaineers vehicles.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and relationship-building skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability when things don’t go as planned
  • Positive attitude and ability to carry oneself in a professional manner to create positive experiences
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification, or ability to become certified before start date

Desired Qualifications

  • Summer camp experience, or comparable experience working with 9-17 year olds in single day or overnight settings
  • Climbing and belaying experience
  • Experience teaching outdoor recreation skills such as hiking, backpacking, climbing, first aid, navigation, outdoor cooking, naturalist skills, or teambuilding.
  • Personal outdoor experience (i.e. backpacking, rock climbing, and hiking).
  • Experience managing a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Work Environment

This role is based in Seattle, WA at The Mountaineers’ Stevens Lodge. Camp prep and clean-up will take place at the beginning and end of summer at The Mountaineers’ Seattle Program Center. This position is 100% in-person throughout the summer to support programs.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work and manage a flexible schedule as necessary
  • Ability to lift and move 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 occasionally
  • Ability to sleep in bunkhouse style beds a minimum of four nights a week
  • Ability to be outside and active for extended periods of time, in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, squat, run, or climb as part of duties leading youth; ability to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to 8 miles.

Benefits

This position is for a full-time, seasonal employee. Hours vary throughout the week, including daytime, evenings, and overnight when in the field. Programs do not run on the weekend. Pay rate is $210/day plus an end of season bonus for staff who complete the entire season with a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Housing will be provided from the start of training to the end of camp wrap up. Position start date is June 9 and end date is September 2.
