This position is responsible for the recreational boating safety program at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, and that it  is benefiting boaters and other park visitors. This position shall enforce the New Mexico Boat Act by providing vessel safety inspections, assisting boaters on the water and enforcement of park rules and regulations.  This position must also maintain boating/park facilities, grounds and equipment. This position will present the Boat New Mexico Course to educate boaters on the basics of safe boating within adjacent communities, schools, military bases, etc. This position will also be responsible for providing hands on training for other officers during MEO classes, monitor their development and provide additional training as needed. This position will submit data for monthly and annual reporting regarding the boating program and the United States Coast Guard grant requirements. Required courses must be completed in order to obtain certification(s) to become an instructor for teaching the New Mexico Boating Course and other water related safety courses.

  • Patrol the park to ensure public safety and enforce applicable state, local, and federal laws.
  • Provide customer service by responding to visitor needs and emergencies, such as perform rescue operations, issue citations, make arrests, take statements, conduct investigations, complete reports, and attend court.
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency with defensive equipment and maintain a high level of mental readiness.
  • May conduct investigations, make arrests, serve warrants, issue citations, respond to homicide calls, unattended death calls, suicide calls, public disturbance calls, aggravated assault calls, DUI/BUI calls, domestic violence calls, burglary/theft calls, water rescue calls, search and rescue calls, missing person calls, property damage calls and make routine traffic stops.
  • Collect and verify revenues due to the state.
  • Write in a clear and concise manner.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly logs and reports.
  • May request quotes and assist in the procurement process for projects.
  • May assist in coordinating interpretive programs for park visitors.
  • May oversee and provide direction to seasonal/temporary staff and volunteers.
  • Request and attend law enforcement training to meet requirements of a commissioned officer.
  • Operate various office equipment, power tools, vessels, and heavy equipment.
