Part-time Educator

Under general supervision, carries out educational activities approved by the McDuffie Environmental Education Center (MEEC). The ideal candidate possesses the ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods and the ability to relate to a diverse student population. Instructors must be able to project passion and enthusiasm for the natural world and explain science lessons and conservation topics clearly and in a way that sparks students’ interests and curiosity. Assists with care of animals and their displays. Training is available for those not experienced with fishing and handling of fish and equipment. This position will work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide environmental education programs (Pre-K to Adults) for school groups, scouts, birthday parties, and the general public on and off-site. (lesson plans provided)
- Work with a wide variety of audiences with different ages, abilities, and backgrounds
- Lead hikes
- Assist or lead fishing activity
- Assist with special events, pollinator garden maintenance, helping maintain facility and other tasks as assigned
- Handle permitted MEEC ambassador animals and insects used in programs and follow all protocol
- Help to feed and maintain a clean, healthy environment of reptile/fish tanks
- Prepare and/or present lectures and interpretative talks about environmental programs, resources, site features or classroom displays.
- Attend mandatory meetings and trainings.
Entry Qualifications:
- High School diploma/GED and one (1) year experience in the educational field.
- Self-motivated to learn about and be passionate about parks, recreation, and nature
- A strong desire to work with both children and adults in an outdoor setting
- Be creative, flexible, and team-oriented
- Be willing to work weekends and/or evenings as needed
- Ability to lift 30 pounds
- Ability to walk 1-2 miles on unpaved trails
- Demonstrated communication skills and comfort with public speaking
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in environmental education or outdoor recreation programming
- Animal husbandry experience
- Excellent written communication skills
- Experience managing a social media account
- Current first aid and CPR certification (can be obtained after hire)
- Experience in fishing, archery, and/or hiking
