A position with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado in partnership with the City of Greeley Natural Areas & Trails.

Office Location: City of Greeley NAT Office, Island Grove Park, Greeley, CO

Position Type: Hyrbid, 50% in office and 50% virtual. 20-30 hours, 4 days per week.

Region Covered: VOC’s northern front range region includes 10 counties; Larimer, Weld, Broomfield, Adams, Morgan, Washington, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Yuma.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a leading statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to motivating and enabling people to become active stewards of Colorado’s natural resources.  Colorado’s outdoor resources contribute greatly to our health, happiness and state economy, but they also face ongoing stresses and require care and stewardship to ensure long-term sustainability. Leveraging 40 years of experience in outdoor stewardship volunteerism, we engage 3,000 volunteers in hands-on stewardship work each year. We also help other groups develop and grow effective volunteer programs to meet Colorado’s growing stewardship needs. Finally, we foster statewide, cross-industry collaboration to encourage a unified approach to caring for Colorado.

Position Overview

This part-time, non-exempt position is an employee of VOC, in partnership with the City of Greeley, working closely with local land managers and related organizations to continue building outdoor volunteer stewardship capacity in the northern front range region of Colorado. This position’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Management, coordination, and administration of outdoor volunteer stewardship projects in the northern front range region.
  • Coordination and support of land managers and community organizations to assist with their volunteer stewardship needs, projects, and trainings.
  • Development of strategic partnerships and fostering regional stewardship collaboration between local agencies, municipalities, and community organizations.

This position is an employee of VOC with remote supervision provided by VOC’s Partnership Office Manager. However, this position will spend the majority of their time working and coordinating project priorities with City of Greeley and will have an office in the City of Greeley’s Natural Areas and Trails department.

Responsibilities

Program Management  

  • Serve as the Project Lead for all VOC projects and trainings in the northern front range region and host other community-based volunteer projects as needed to build additional local capacity.
  • Develop and implement a systematic approach for project development, coordinating with agency representatives and local project partners in the northern front range region.
  • Coordinate opportunities to train local volunteer leaders using VOC’s Outdoor Stewardship Institute and other resources to develop technical and leadership skills within the volunteer workforce.
  • Manage the local VOC tool and gear cache, maintaining tools and other equipment as needed throughout the season.
  • Manage a Greeley based fleet vehicle, performing routine maintenance and reporting to Fleet Manager.
  • Manage schedule and content for VOC’s local Newsletter Western Wheatgrass.
  • Attend regular meetings with VOC staff, City of Greeley staff and local partners.
  • Solicit in-kind donations from local businesses to support the volunteer program and annual VOC events.

Volunteer Recruitment and Administration

  • Develop and implement a systematic approach for outreach and local volunteer recruitment for specific projects and ongoing volunteer programs.
  • Conduct effective communications about volunteer opportunities through meetings, print material, digital media, and other strategies.
  • Foster and develop partnerships with northern front range agencies, municipalities, and organizations in the community, serving as the agency liaison, and attending partner meetings and outreach events.
  • Manage VOC volunteer registration and communications processes using VOC’s database and registration systems and volunteer recruitment tools.
  • Serve as the primary administrator of northern front range volunteer data.
  • Serve as the primary contact for local volunteer program inquiries from partners and the public.

Qualifications

Desired Skills, qualities and abilities

  • This is a community-based position, candidates local to the northern front region area preferred.
  • Educational or professional background in any of the following or related fields preferred: natural resources management, parks management, environmental science or studies, nonprofit or volunteer management.
  • Previous experience coordinating and recruiting volunteers, planning volunteer projects and working with the public in a nonprofit and/or government environment.
  • Previous experience with trail work, ecological restoration, farming, landscaping, or other outdoor stewardship projects preferred. Chainsaw certification a plus.
  • A bilingual candidate is desired but not required.

Required skills, qualities and abilities:

  • Requires current wilderness first aid and CPR certification, or ability to complete certifications within 30 days from the official start date.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be comfortable with 4-wheel drive vehicles and work in a variety of outdoor environments and weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends, evenings, and multi-day projects based on project and meeting requirements.
  • Ability to self-initiate and self-direct workflow, as well as being comfortable working with a team to achieve goals.
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, database management, and internet use; knowledge of web-based data systems.
  • Great communication skills with diverse audiences and comfortable talking in front of and leading groups of people.
  • Outstanding time management and organizational skills.
  • The desire to work a 50/50 split between office and field work.

VOC Coordinators must have access to the following equipment for use on projects (VOC can provide access through a gear library for a few of the items):

  • Sturdy hiking boots or work boots
  • Rain gear and warm outdoor layers
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad

Attendance at evening meetings and assigned project weekends and site visits are required as part of this job.
