The Position:
This is a part-time, on-call, field-based position located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) on the island of Oahu. You must reside or be willing to relocate to the island of Oahu. Work is projected to go through December 2025 (with possibility to extend). Fieldwork hours are from approximately 6:00am – 3:00pm. Fieldwork may occur over a varying number of days, ranging from a single day to multiple days.
Duties include: 

• Monitoring and surveying for Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Hawaiian waterbirds and Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) species that are present on an active construction site. 
• Identifying Hawaiian waterbirds by sight and sound -Successfully identifying nesting behaviors of Hawaiian waterbirds.
• Taking clear, effective notes and photos -Interacting and educating construction and base personnel on activities that can be potentially harmful to ESA and MBTA species. 
• Performing high-quality, precise work using scientific protocols 
• Occasionally working long days, including early mornings and late evenings in the field, as needed

• Experience with Hawaiian fauna and flora species.
• Familiarity with Hawaiian culture, language, and environmental issues.
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• Probationary period: This position has a six (6) month probationary period. 

Who You Are:
You must have:

• 4- year college degree in the following fields: 
• Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, Ornithology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or a similar course of study 
• One year of field experience with Hawaiian waterbird research, monitoring, or survey experience.
  OR 
• Three years minimum of direct field experience with Hawaiian waterbird research, monitoring, or surveys.
• Knowledge to follow scientific and standard survey methods, execute the work in the field environment, move across difficult terrain, and perform in adverse weather conditions.
• Familiarity with state/federal environmental laws and regulations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft apps, data analysis, software, and tools.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations.
• Must be able to pass a federal background check and be authorized to work in the U.S.
