Description
We seek two motivated seasonal wildlife technicians to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) with monitoring beach-nesting shorebirds in coastal Florida.
The ideal candidates would be available to start mid March 2025 and continue through September 2025 (exact start and end dates are flexible). Focal shorebird species include American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, Wilson’s Plovers, and Black Skimmers. The incumbent’s primary duties will involve working with a team to search for and monitor shorebird and seabird nests, banding of shorebirds/seabirds, performing band re-sight surveys, disturbance surveys, predator tracking surveys, data entry, photo evaluation, and maintaining protected nesting habitat. The positions will be based out of Gainesville Florida but extensive travel, in particular, day trips (8-12 hour days) will be required. Salary for these positions is $17.50/ hour with a 40-hour work week. Housing is not provided, but non-monetary assistance to find housing can be provided if needed. Competitive Applicants will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science, or a related field
- Experience with seabird and shorebird identification
- Experience handling, banding and re-sighting birds.
- Strong interpersonal skills for communicating with the public and partners.
- Proficiency operating boats and towing trailers is preferred
- Ability to traverse through sandy and rocky substrate
- Close attention to detail, excellent organization and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility with out of town travel
- Willingness to work long days in the field (may include early mornings, late afternoons and some weekends) under hot and humid weather conditions
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Valid driver's license and experience with 4WD vehicles
