Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District (KLSWCD) is looking for a team player with experience in the environmental field. The person in this position assists with planning and program development, and provides established programs to landowners, farmers, natural resource-related organizations, and units of government that helps them conserve and utilize our soil, water, forestry and wildlife resources. Providing and conducting educational programs and technical assistance are prime components of the position.

The KLSWCD is an independent unit of state government working closely with the Maine Association of Conservation Districts, Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, and the Federal Dept. of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The Program Development Specialist works closely with the KLSWCD Office Manager, Program Coordinator, Conservation Technician, and volunteer Board of Supervisors.

The Program Development Specialist position requires a flexible and professional individual who has initiative and can work independently to complete tasks and projects. An office is provided; however, the position includes field work, initiating special projects, meeting with the public, organizing off site workshops, and site visits.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Promote public awareness of soil & water conservation through outreach and education for adults and youth
  • Provide research on and technical support as needed through written reports, public presentations and publications. 
  • Oversee and/or conduct special projects and/or events (plant sale, bus tour, etc.)
  • Identify additional funding opportunities, assist in writing grant applications and develop reports related to grant progress
  • Prepare monthly reports for Board meetings
  • Respond to general e-mail inquiries as appropriate

Examples of Technical Assistance Areas:

  • Engage in invasive species field surveys, mapping, and report writing as needed
  • Address water quality concerns by providing client guidance for sediment and erosion control and related issues
  • Assist in the oversight of the Conservation Landscape Certification program\
  • Provide input and address other areas as needed

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas of Environmental Science, Conservation, Natural Resources, Forestry or Agriculture.
  • At least two years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills; strong writing skills.
  • Proficient with database software and website tools (Squarespace, Little Green Light, etc.), the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email), plus GIS tools.
  • Attention to detail is a must; ability to exercise discretion.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently within a small team; sense of humor essential.
  • Interest in nonprofit and/or environmental organizations; previous experience in nonprofit and/or environmental organization a plus.
