The Wilmurt Club, a private recreational club founded in 1887 and located near Hoffmeister, NY, has an exciting employment opportunity beginning in the summer of 2025 for a Property Caretaker.  The position is full-time with a generous compensation package, including a salary ($30,000-40,000, based on experience), housing, paid utilities, vacation, and a retirement plan.  The Club has a unique Mission and consists of c. 2000 acres, with two natural glacier lakes, 13 individual “Camps” owned by Club “Members”,  and a large Clubhouse in a spectacular and remote setting at c. 2500 feet.  The property is surrounded by “Forever Wild” Adirondack wilderness.

The Caretaker is to maintain a rough 50/50 split of time between Club work and private contract projects on individual camps.  He/she oversees the security, safety, and repair of the Wilmurt Club on behalf of the Board of Directors.   Within that context, every effort should be made to ensure that the club is neat, orderly, and quiet so as to preserve its natural rustic character.

 Club work includes the following:

  • Security- Watch for trespassers, maintain and replace posted signs, monitor locks on the gate, various boats, and buildings, and safeguard club equipment, ensuring no external boats are brought on Club grounds.
  • Supervision and assistance to service providers on the hill- such as propane deliveries, fire extinguisher inspectors, contractors, painters, house cleaners, scientists, loggers, DEC officials, etc. and to generally oversee comings and goings at the club.
  • Safety- Daily/periodic checks on members and guests.  Identify and remedy dangerous situations such as road hazards, falling trees/limbs, or fire hazards, maintaining Club’s motor boat in good working order through the season.
  • Road and culvert maintenance (seasonal)- Keeping the roadbed sound and a passable width, keeping the shoulders and a reasonable distance into the woods free of downfalls and large log butts removed from the road, repairing washouts, etc.
  • Trail Maintenance- Trails around Wilmurt Lake and connecting to the Big Rock landing and lean-to.  The Overlook and Wilmurt Mountain trails are included.  All associated bridges and culverts are to be maintained.
  • Dam and fish weir maintenance as directed by the Lake Management committee.
  • Maintenance of all Club buildings and structures including the caretaker’s house, pole barn, garage, and shed down the hill, TNT shed, Club landing, Clubhouse, and storage shed up the hill.  This includes snow removal from roofs and leveling as needed.
  • Tool and machinery inventory and maintenance including the bulldozer, jake-rake, etc. Tools, equipment, and materials should be stored inside or otherwise hidden from view so as not to compromise the natural beauty of the club.
  • Rafts and buoys- Seasonally in/out and repairs.
  • Clubhouse and boathouse- Assist guests, provide heavy lifting (i.e. the generator) for house cleaners, general maintenance and leveling, lawn, fireplaces, and firewood.
  • Member’s camps- Provide Private Contract services at camp owner’s expense to include opening and closing of camps, mow lawn, firewood replenishment, appliance replacement and/or simple repairs, simple water and sewage system repairs, and shovel snow from roofs as necessary.
  • Community Relations - Maintain good working relationships with the town and local residents and officials.

Compensation: $30,000-$40,000 base salary, use of three bedroom furnished ranch house on 4.2 acre lot with utilities included, health insurance, 401k, vacation, and vehicle and phone allowance.  Additional compensation available through private contract work.

Private contract work is to be negotiated with camp owners based on a rate of $50 per hour.  Routine camp work (opening/closing camps, mowing lawns, shoveling snow from roofs) is to be completed at a rate of $35 per hour.  Private work should not interfere with the Caretaker’s Club work, as listed above.  Private contract work is exclusively restricted to the Wilmurt Club or Member’s Camps and is arranged solely and exclusively between the Member and Caretaker.  Work can include general construction, renovation and replacement, tree removal, maintenance or replacement of appliances, sewage and water systems,  and other such work that is often associated with maintaining Adirondack camps.
