This position exists for coordination and management of tree seed collection and planting activities in support of reforestation efforts throughout New Mexico. The position exists to implement the reforestation strategy in the 2020 Forest Action Plan and to reforest the millions of acres of lands burned in wildfire in New Mexico. The position will work in close association with the New Mexico Reforestation Center.
This position coordinates and manages the New Mexico Reforestation Center and statewide planting activities in support of reforestation. The position exists to implement the reforestation strategy in the 2020 Forest Action Plan and to reforest the millions of acres of lands burned in wildfire in New Mexico. The position will work in close association with the New Mexico Reforestation Center, which is a collaborative effort between the New Mexico State University, University of New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands University and the Forestry Division. The customers are state, federal, tribal and local government land managers and natural resource managers, private landowners and landowner contractors, extension service, and non-governmental organizations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing partnerships and securing funding
- Overseeing tree seed collection, nursery coordination, and planting projects
- Working with landowners, land managers, and agencies to develop reforestation initiatives
- Facilitating training programs and engaging with scientific and practitioner networks
- Supporting cross-boundary restoration efforts and wildfire recovery initiatives
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Knowledge of seed collection and reforestation techniques
- Experience in a tree nursery or other nursery setting
- Ability to organize a statewide program and to juggle multiple complex projects and timelines
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in meetings and when giving presentations
- Master's degree in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management or related preferred
Minimum Qualification: Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Any combination of education in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
