Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate and self-motivated Restoration Program Director to lead our coral reef restoration efforts in the Florida Keys. This hands-on role requires a dynamic individual who thrives in challenging environments and can think critically to solve complex problems. The Director will be responsible for overseeing coral restoration projects, working closely with the nursery managers, and leading a team dedicated to the conservation and expansion of coral nurseries.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work in diverse and sometimes demanding conditions, including variable water temperatures, tough visibility, and long hours on the water, while contributing to the preservation and restoration of coral reef ecosystems. Flexibility, resilience, and strong leadership are essential to succeed in this role, as the Director will manage restoration projects, coordinate with stakeholders, and ensure all activities comply with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) protocols and grant deliverables.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in coral nursery management, restoration activities, diving, and boating, along with strong skills in team leadership, project management, and collaboration with volunteers and governmental agencies. Leadership Skills Required

Leadership & Team Development:

  • Lead and motivate a team of divers, nursery managers, and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Provide clear direction, set expectations, and ensure accountability for team members, creating a culture of shared responsibility and mutual support.
  • Offer mentorship and training to less experienced team members, ensuring knowledge transfer and skill development, particularly in coral restoration and nursery management.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, ensuring that team members understand objectives and can collaborate toward common goals.
  • Build strong relationships with internal staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders, promoting an open and inclusive approach to problem-solving.

Decision-Making & Problem-Solving:

  • Demonstrate strong decision-making abilities, especially in dynamic and sometimes challenging field conditions, ensuring operations continue efficiently and safely.
  • Anticipate potential issues in the nursery and restoration processes and implement proactive solutions.

Management Experience:

  • At least 3 years of managerial experience, preferably within a marine or environmental field, with proven ability to oversee multiple teams or locations.

Flexibility & Adaptability:

  • Lead with resilience and flexibility in changing or challenging field conditions (e.g., unpredictable weather, water conditions), adapting plans as necessary while maintaining team morale and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Leadership and Strategy

  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for the coral restoration program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and conservation strategies.
  • Develop and execute long-term plans for nursery utilization needs, restoration goals, and overall program growth.
  • Manage restoration program, allocate resources effectively, and ensure financial accountability in all operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) protocols and other regulatory requirements, maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship.

Nursery and Restoration Management

  • Oversee all coral nursery operations, ensuring that Nursery Managers and teams are meeting production, maintenance, and restoration targets.
  • Lead efforts in coral production and propagation, ensuring alignment with grant deliverables and restoration goals.
  • Supervise and participate in coral outplanting activities and lead efforts to further refine techniques to increase efficiency and improve coral survival rates Ensure all vessels used for field activities are regularly inspected, repaired, and meet safety standards for marine operations.
  • Ensure that the gene bank for all species and genotypes is maintained and updated according to conservation and renewal standards.
  • Collaborate with the Nursery Managers on hurricane preparedness plans and ensure all structures and equipment are safeguarded.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Supervise Nursery Managers and restoration teams, providing leadership, mentorship, and performance evaluations to foster professional growth and development.
  • Coordinate training programs for new staff and volunteers, ensuring proper knowledge transfer and skills development in coral restoration techniques and best practices.
  • Build a cohesive team environment that promotes collaboration and ensures accountability across all restoration activities.

Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders, including grant agencies, governmental bodies, and conservation partners, ensuring clear and effective communication.
  • Produce annual reports on restoration outcomes, grant deliverables, and project progress to NOAA, FKNMS, and other relevant agencies.
  • Work closely with community partners and volunteers, maintaining strong relationships to support the organization's coral reef renewal efforts.

Monitoring and Data Oversight

  • Lead and actively participate in data collection and reporting processes for coral monitoring and restoration activities.
  • Ensure that monitoring protocols are followed, with data on coral survival, disease presence, and other relevant factors recorded and submitted for review.
  • Ensure compliance with all current permits and apply for and obtain any permits required in the future.
  • Supervise the acquisition and production of photo-mosaics and other visual documentation to capture restoration progress and successes.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Marine Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field (advanced degrees preferred).
  • Strong diving experience with relevant diver certifications and proficient boat handling skills.
  • Proficiency in widely used project and data management software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Preferred skills: Experience with specialized software, such as Google Earth, Metashape Pro, Viscore, and Photoshop, is a plus.
  • Stong photography skills need needed in the acquisition of scientific evidence and the emerging needs of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Demonstrated experience in leading teams of staff and volunteers, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
  • Ability to relocate to the upper or middle Florida Keys and work in diverse marine conditions, including challenging environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with FWC, FKNMS, NOAA, FL DEP or other management agencies.
  • Experience in coral restoration within Florida waters or similar ecosystems, with knowledge of regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans related to coral restoration and conservation efforts.
  • Advanced diving experience, with 500+ logged dives and Rescue Diver certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically fit and be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including the heat and humidity typical of South Florida.
  • Must be capable of diving and carrying out in-water tasks related to coral restoration.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and special events.
