The Department of Ecology at Montana State University is seeking field technicians for the summer (May – Sep) of 2025 to assist with high-profile data collection on the Yellowstone River in southwest Montana. Successful candidates will assist with recreational usage data collection that supports an integrated and collaborative research project between the Department of Ecology at Montana State University, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department, and the USGS Cooperative Fishery Research Unit at Montana State University investigating mechanisms associated with trout population declines in social-ecological systems.
Field work will include driving, administering surveys to recreationists, collecting passive survey returns, and data entry. Housing (near Gardiner, MT) and field vehicles will be provided at no charge to technician. Schedules will vary but aim to be hitch-style to provide ample opportunity to explore and recreate. These positions are a phenomenal opportunity to gain valuable fisheries, human dimensions, and conservation-oriented experience, as well as work and live in a recreational paradise.
Suitable candidates will demonstrate an interest in ecological and/or conservation related research and be able to work hard in challenging conditions (e.g., long drive times and distances). Previous experience will be considered. Applicants must hold a valid US driver’s license. Technicians are required to manage and organize interview data. The positions will require being stationed at free provided housing (near study sites) only during allocated shift times, and a willingness to work long hours, drive long distances, and operate automobiles at low visibility times (e.g., dawn, dusk). These positions start in May 2025 and continue through September 30, 2025. Successful candidates can expect to gain experience in fisheries and conservation research and data collection.
