Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the National Park Service will host a Safety Technician.
This Safety Technician is an AmeriCorps position that will help promote occupational health and safety programming within the PWR, with will contribute to efforts to reduce the potential for injuries to those working within national park units. Additionally, this agreement supports career and skill development for the selected Individual Placement. Job training and hands-on experience is critical for students upon graduation, and this experience assisting project managers in all aspects of their duties will help Individual Placements to be competitive on the job market. The mentorship that the Individual Placement receives will help them understand possible career paths and how to achieve them. Additionally, this project promotes and stimulates the public purposes of education as the Individual Placement will better understand the role of safety, health, and wellness in the NPS and its park partners, which is crucial to the functioning of the national park system.
Description of Duties:
- Provide administrative, visual/media and data analysis support to the regional safety, health, and wellness team
- Provide technical support and guidance to regional parks and networks
- Conduct training needs assessments through research
- Assist with implementing the NPS National Safety, Health, and Wellness Strategy
- Provide education and awareness for health, wellness, and resilience information and services to improve the total wellbeing of employees
- Assist with researching and developing ways to decrease the prevalence of injuries and illness in various types of workplaces.
Qualifications:
- Coursework related to engineering, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental safety and health, risk management, organizational behavior, psychology, and/or wellness]
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Additional Position and Community Information
- This office duty station is located in downtown San Francisco with various means of commuter transportation to include MUNI, BART, parking garages, and Rideshares. The City of San Francisco offers many amenities within walking distance. This is a very high cost of living area, and most individuals commute into the city from surrounding Bay Area communities.
- Member must have reliable transportation and/or means of commuting to duty station. Telework may be allowed.

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
- This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary.
- Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive on board training related to the position and general safety training related to the position.
- $6,000 Professional Development and Travel Budget
Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
