Two (2) positions – Rochester, Washington: Anticipated Appointment Length: 3.5 months – March 16, 2025 – June 30, 2025 – On-site living accommodations (Travel Trailer) including utilities are provided for the duration of the appointment length.

One (1) position – Elma, Washington – Anticipated Appointment Length: 3 months – March 16, 2025 – June 15, 2025 – On-site living accommodations (Travel Trailer) including utilities are provided for the duration of the appointment length.

Join a dynamic team dedicated to advancing fisheries management through engaging fieldwork. Operate and maintain fish traps across the Chehalis River Basin. 

Elevate your data collection skills by using various marking/tagging techniques, including coded wire tags (CWT) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. 

What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Working title will,

  • Assist with the installation, removal, operation, and maintenance of juvenile and adult fish traps.
  • Check trap(s) daily, counting, and sub-sampling juvenile and adult fish catch.
  • Collect and record biological and environmental data as assigned.
  • Use various marking and tagging techniques, including, but not limited to, coded wire tags (CWT), passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, fin clips, visible implant elastomer (VIE), Microject, opercule punch, and bismark brown.
  • Perform efficiency trials.
  • Enter and error check data into agency database(s) and paper forms.
  • Drive agency vehicles to and from work sites as directed which may include off-road conditions and trailering.

Qualifications: 

Required Qualifications:  

Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1 

Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. 

Option 3: Equivalent education/experience

Note: Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience.

Licenses: Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess one or more of the following:

Experience In:

  • Identifying juvenile salmonids by species and other incidental catch.
  • Operating, maintaining, and repairing fish traps.
  • Using a variety of hand tools, power tools and small engine machinery including generators, pumps, and outboard motors.
  • Entering data into computer files and spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Access) software.
  • Coordinating and communicating with co-workers and other fisheries professionals.
  • Organizational skills.

Knowledge of:

  • Salmon life history and proper fish-handling techniques.
  • Juvenile salmon trapping techniques.
  • Fish marking and tagging protocols.

Working Conditions: 

Work Setting: The majority of the work is performed in the field. Trapping operations are dependent on fish migration and environmental conditions. Furthermore, during peak migration or periods of high flow/heavy debris, the employees must be able to work long hours, as needed, until all the fish are processed, to ensure that they are released in good condition. Work sites are exposed, meaning work may be conducted in rain, wind, and cold conditions, during all hours of the day and night. Processing fish requires prolonged exposure of hands to cold water. Technicians will regularly transport 5-gallon buckets of water in slippery conditions on uneven terrain. To ensure the fish are handled with minimal stress, they are anesthetized with MS-222. The process of marking fish involves using sharp objects, VIE, and bismark brown. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments. 

Schedule: The traps are operated 7 days/week, 24hr/day throughout the season, requiring work on weekends and holidays.

Travel Requirements: Daily travel from duty station to field locations using agency vehicle. Some navigating on gravel logging roads with a 4x4 truck.

Tools and Equipment: Trucks, cars, boats, outboard motors, trailers, boat dolly, GPS units, compass, temperature loggers, tablets, head lamps, flashlights, measuring board, DNA envelopes, maps, totes/bins, paper forms, labels, scale cards, MS-222, blotter sheets, pencils, pens, clipboard, scissors, scalpels, forceps; computer, cell phones, electronic sampling equipment, Mark IV CWT tagging unit, QCD device, CWT wand, V-Detector; scale, first aid kit, calculator, knives, PFD, WDFW apparel, chest waders, wading boots, wading belt, trail cameras, rubber boots, gloves; hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, pumps, winches, ladders, generators, hydraulic and water pumps; fish collection gear including nets, seines, weirs, scoop, screw and fan traps; PIT tag reader, and rain gear.

Customer Interactions: Infrequent interactions with public and landowners. 

Housing: On-site living accommodations (Travel Trailer) including utilities are provided for the duration of the appointment length.
