San Vicente Redwoods Access Assistant 

Status                       Part Time / Non-Exempt

Term                         Temporary, 6-month term from January – June 2025

Wage Range            $20-25 per hour   

Job Summary:

The San Vicente Redwoods Access Assistant is responsible for assisting with public access and natural resource management at the San Vicente Redwoods property in Bonny Doon. This position interacts with trail users and visitors providing education and information in a professional and friendly manner. This position also assists with maintenance of trail infrastructure and trailhead facilities.

This is a temporary position, with the possibility of extension, working in a dynamic post-fire recovering forest and a great work environment. This position is approximately 20 hours per week, Wednesday through Saturday.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Visitor information and trail patrols
    • Communicate with visitors on trails etiquette, property rules, natural resource protection, etc.
    • Monitor trail and visitor use; discourage and educate regarding unallowed activities; report illegal activity to supervisor.
    • Remediate signs of off trail activity to discourage additional trespass and misuse.
    • Assist visitors with kiosk registration and property questions.
    • Assist with volunteer activities on site.
    • Open and close the property punctually during public operation hours.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Natural resource and facilities management at San Vicente Redwoods.
    • Assist with maintenance and repair of facilities and infrastructure (trails, gates, fences, buildings, culverts, etc.).
    • Assist with habitat management and restoration including weed management, and erosion control.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Ability & Experience:

  • Ability to work productively autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with many personalities.
  • Ability to maintain clear and accurate records.
  • Have driver’s license, proof of insurance and be capable of driving safely in city, rural, and 4 wheel-drive conditions.
  • Ability to identify various resource issues and report effectively to management staff.
  • Physically capable of performing extended outdoor labor such as digging, reaching, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 40 pounds of weight in adverse terrain (steep slopes, muddy, heavily vegetated, sandy) in hot or cold temperatures with potential exposure to poison oak, ticks, wasps, and other natural hazards.

Preferred Job Knowledge, Skills, Ability & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, college coursework in a related field, or experience.
  • Ability and knowledge of how to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools, including chainsaws and mowers, following all proper protective equipment guidelines.
  • Proficient with basic computer programs including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel), smartphones, and internet-based applications.
  • Knowledge of native and non-native plants and animals found in Santa Cruz County.
  • An understanding of the conservation of natural, agricultural, cultural, and open space resources and the role of land trusts in that effort.
  • Wilderness First Aid
