Maine Audubon is hiring an experienced and dynamic leader to oversee our busy environmental education programs and retail operations at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center (SMAC). Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action. The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center has hosted a nature center and store, school programs, canoe/kayak rentals, nature tours, community science, interpretation, and other environmental education and community engagement programs within the 3,100 acre Scarborough Marsh estuary owned and managed by Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for more than 50 years.
Position Overview
We are seeking a well-rounded, hands-on manager who has experience in overseeing a busy canoe/kayak rental program, retail operations, and other community engagement activities that help diverse people and communities access and enjoy the natural world. SMAC serves 10,000 people annually through a robust calendar of daily operations, annual programs, and community partnerships. The manager also communicates and collaborates across every functional area at Maine Audubon to ensure alignment with the statewide organization’s policy, mission, priorities, systems, and processes.
The SMAC Manager reports to the Associate Director of Education and is responsible for managing a small and diverse team of seasonal operational staff and volunteers, while also coordinating with varied functional areas within Maine Audubon as the point person for SMAC programs, marketing, properties management, finance, and human resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate an engaging annual catalog of environmental education and natural history programs for people of all ages.
- Lead the hiring, management, and mentoring of seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Oversee all retail and other business operations in collaboration with the Maine Audubon finance department.
- Schedule staff, and lead group/class visits from local schools and other community groups.
- Collaborate with Maine Audubon communications department to plan and implement marketing plans and to develop educational content, public interpretation, signage, etc.
- Coordinate community science and other conservation initiatives in and around Scarborough Marsh in collaboration with Maine Audubon’s conservation and naturalist teams.
- Serve as a visible and articulate ambassador for Scarborough Marsh ecosystems, recreational values, and educational resources, and a point person for Maine Audubon’s place-based collaborations and partnerships there.
- Maintain equipment and physical infrastructure by coordinating seasonal opening, closing, and annual maintenance plans with the Maine Audubon properties and IT teams.
- Oversee safety for all staff, volunteers, interns, and visitors, including implementing risk management plans around canoe and kayak rentals and tours.
Qualifications
- Experience teaching and/or managing environmental education, outdoor education, or other similar mission-oriented program leadership.
- Business/retail operations management or supervisory experience required. Budgeting and inventory management experience a plus.
- Experience managing staff and/or volunteers.
- Training, certification, and/or experience in wilderness first aid, water safety, CPR a plus. Must obtain or sustain that training/certification with Maine Audubon support.
- Knowledge of and affinity for Maine Audubon’s mission.
- Commitment to Maine Audubon’s equity and inclusion values.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions
- Able to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs.
- Able to frequently hike natural woodland trails
- Able to work outside, especially in exposed summer weather conditions
- Comfort around water and canoeing/kayaking
Timing, Compensation, and Benefits
- This is a full-time, site-based position for at least April through September each year, which will include some weekends and holidays.
