Position Summary:
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues.

A Scientific Programmer position is available with CEMML and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO or remote. The successful candidate will support CEMML’s Wildland Fire Program by developing and maintaining Python code supporting climate change analysis, risk assessment, wildland fire management planning, and other subject areas as needed. Work tends to include automated text file manipulation, graphical representations of data, and logical, statistical, and mathematical calculations, but other needs may arise. The outputs from completed code are used internally for further analyses and externally to support DOD wildland fire management decision making. The Python Programmer will use best management practices, including Agile concepts and version control software such as Gitlab, to develop functional visions for each code effort, to develop, improve, and maintain code, and to organize code. The Python Programmer will work directly with CEMML’s Wildland Fire Program Manager to develop functional requirements and develop a systematic approach to code development.

Remote, hybrid, or in-person work are all possible.

Required Qualifications:    

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (BS or BA).
  • At least three years of professional experience carrying out medium to large-scale automation processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with ArcPy, Pandas, and/or NumPy libraries.
  • Demonstrated experience developing highly technical processes and/or algorithms.
  • Demonstrated experience using versioning control technology such as Git.
  • Demonstrated experience setting up an Integrated Development Environment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
