What We Can Achieve Together:
The Conservation Practitioner II (Conservation Steward) assists with hands-on maintenance and management of The Nature Conservancy’s nature preserves and conservation easements in New York State. Some duties include:
- Maintaining preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, including trailheads, kiosks, and trail networks
- Removal of invasive species and/or conducting species monitoring
- Assisting with preserve and easement monitoring
- Maintaining preserve records using a database, PC, and/or mobile device
The Conservation Steward will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. The position often requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
The anticipated duration of this temporary position is approximately 5 months with a start date in early to mid-May. Housing is not available for this position. This position pays $21/hour.

Working with the Conservancy’s conservation team will provide the selected candidate with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of worldwide conservation issues and strategies for addressing threats to biodiversity. The Conservation Steward will have ample opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience in the fields of applied conservation and land management.

What You’ll Bring:
- High school diploma or GED and 1 year of related experience in land management or training in a science-related field.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., gardening and landscaping tools, string trimmer, lawn mower, cordless drill/driver, etc.).
- Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
- Knowledge of, or a demonstrated interest in, local ecology and natural systems.
- Experience collecting spatial and biological data in the field.
- Experience operating a chainsaw.
- Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
- Experience performing physically demanding work and the ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment cooperatively with a variety of volunteers and employees.
- Organizational skills and ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
- PC and mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
