The Missouri River Bird Observatory (MRBO) seeks a Seasonal Environmental Education Coordinator from approximately 15 March to 31 July 2025.
MRBO is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats via science, education, and advocacy. We are based in the unique village of Arrow Rock, Missouri, a state and national Historic Site adjacent to the Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge Jameson Island unit. MRBO is a small organization with a big impact thanks to the dedication and hard work of the staff, board, and volunteers. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Seasonal Environmental Education Coordinator.
Job Description:
The Coordinator is responsible for conducting education programs for youth and adults in central Missouri. This position is a great opportunity to utilize a variety of skills, share your passion for birds and conservation, and develop and implement unique programming. The Coordinator organizes and delivers MRBO’s Young Explorers Club summer day camp, develops and conducts diverse programs in mid-Missouri, assists with Missouri Young Birders Club programming, and delivers “one-off” outreach events all over the state. The Coordinator works closely with MRBO’s Co-founders, other staff members including the Kansas City Community Conservation Educator and Central Region Outreach Assistant, volunteers, and a variety of partner organizations. The position also requires the ability to work independently, guiding program development and day-to-day operations.
The educator will receive training in local habitats, natural history, the Missouri conservation community, and MRBO’s programming and organizational background and then be responsible for developing and conducting programs independently as well as part of the MRBO team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, develop, and present custom programs for schools, other non-profit organizations, clubs, businesses, and the public throughout central Missouri and occasionally in other parts of the state.
- Collaborate with MRBO’s Outreach Assistant on Arrow Rock Natural History Programs: ecology and natural history walks for 3rd – 6th grade classes during the period of 15 April – 25 May.
- Serve as Camp Coordinator for the Young Explorers’ Camp sessions, which take place over three weeks in June:

- Coordinate with MRBO’s Outreach Assistant, who has previous experience with the Young Explorers’ Camp.
- Coordinate volunteers, guest presenters, campers, and parents – including marketing the camps, taking applications, ensuring all required paperwork is received from parents, and organizing logistics
- Develop and implement programming and activities.
- Manage camp equipment and supplies
- Frequently operate MRBO’s BirdHouse, our visitor center on Arrow Rock’s Main Street, during open hours on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as develop and lead unique BirdHouse programs.
- Assist MRBO staff with Missouri Young Birders Club programming
- Lead or assist with outreach via tabling at numerous events in Arrow Rock and throughout Missouri.
- Work with and develop relationships with MRBO’s partner organizations and agencies.
- Assist with a variety of other public outreach opportunities as needed.
The ideal candidate:
- Is highly detail-oriented, rational, resilient, and organized in their thinking and planning.
- Is deeply inspired by environmental education and conservation.
- Leads by example and inspires others with an environmentally conscientious lifestyle.
- Has a demonstrated track record in education event coordination, including all aspects of development, planning, and execution.
- Understands that in order to reach and accommodate the most people, education programming necessarily involves weekend work and sometimes evening hours.
- Has experience and proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Excel, Word, etc.) and cloud sharing services (i.e. Google Drive, Sharepoint etc.).
- Is committed to including all people in nature experiences and is motivated to reach underserved communities.
- Is professional in their written and verbal communications.
- Is comfortable working and teaching outdoors and in the field (moderate physical fitness is needed).
- Has basic bird identification skills/ ability to lead groups on bird outings.
- Enjoys growing partnerships, networking, and collaboration.
Location, Hours, Salary and Benefits:
- This position requires the candidate to live in the mid-Missouri area to be on site in Arrow Rock several times per week (frequency is seasonal).
- Schedule is extremely variable and based on program needs – weekend and evening work can be frequent at some times.
- Overnight travel is sometimes necessary (approximately 1-3 times per month)
- This is a full time, salaried position for its duration of 4.5 months. Salary is $2,800/month
- Work-related travel expenses (personal vehicle use, lodging, some meals) are reimbursed in full.
- This position has the potential for extension based on job performance, interest, and continued funding.
