Schedule: June through August. Part-time on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays, 8-10 hours each day.
Payrate: $17.71/hour
Location: Bayfield County Land & Water Conservation Department in Washburn, Wisconsin.
Description: Two Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) interns will work together on outreach, invasive species education, and watercraft inspections at boat landings in Bayfield, Ashland, Iron and Douglas County. AIS Interns will tow a hot water pressure washer to boat landings. They will wash boats and other equipment. Interns will provide invasive species information to residents and tourists through informal conversations and scheduled programs. Most of the work will be in the field without direct supervision, interacting with residents and tourists daily. Successful candidates may also assist with data entry, outreach programs, invasive species management, and AIS surveys. This work is managed by the Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area (NCWMA). Positions are funded with grants through the U.S. Forest Service.
Responsibilities
- Inspect watercraft for invasive species.
- Engage and educate visitors at boat launches.
- Perform watercraft decontamination with a hot water pressure washer.
- Drive a county vehicle to sites, towing and operating a power-washer that is mounted on a trailer.
Experience/Qualifications:
- Successful candidates must be independently motivated, responsible, detail-oriented, flexible, and have good interpersonal communication.
- Must be able to occasionally lift a maximum of 50 pounds and work outdoors in inclement weather.Valid driver’s license required; reliable, insured vehicle preferred. Mileage expenses will be reimbursed.
- Experience driving a truck and towing, attaching, and backing up a trailer (preferred).
- Experience in identifying aquatic invasive species and familiarity with invasive species concepts (preferred).
Details: Positions are 16-20 hours/week from early June to late August. A typical schedule is 10 hours per day on Saturdays and Sundays.
