We’re looking for a motivated Seasonal Shellfish Field Technician to help support the critical work of shellfish restoration and enhancement at the Brant Point Shellfish Hatchery. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in aquaculture and shellfish restoration while working with bay scallops, oysters, and quahogs.

Starting Hourly Rate: $21

(Please note that the advertised hourly pay rate may increase by $2 per hour, pending approval at the Annual Town Meeting.)

The Brant Point Shellfish Hatchery is one of the few municipal shellfish hatcheries with a focus on stock enhancement and restoration of commercially and recreationally important shellfish like bay scallops, oysters, and quahogs. The technician will perform daily detailed tasks primarily involving the grow-out and monitoring of juvenile shellfish at the facility and within the harbors. Applicant will be trained in hatchery production, operation and maintenance of seawater flow-through systems, shellfish monitoring techniques, and the assembly, deployment, and maintenance of our shellfish gear. Applicant will learn how to independently operate, trouble-shoot and clean various types of seawater systems used in rearing high- density shellfish. This position will provide a well-rounded introduction and exposure to shellfish restoration and aquaculture in the field.

Primary Duties (but not limited to):

  • Maintain outdoor flow-through systems.
  • Assist with aquaculture gear, field deployments and evaluations
  • Assist with dive surveys
  • Assist with any departmental related tasks within and/or outside of the facility as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be confident working independently to complete necessary tasks assigned by the NRD supervisor as well as a team player when a group effort is needed. Willingness to assist in departmental tasks outside of the job description is a must. Candidate must be familiar with microscope work, general laboratory techniques, able to multi-task, have a strong attention to detail, and have excellent record keeping and data entry skills. The seasonal technician must be able to stand for long periods of time, comfortable in occasional harsh environments, and be able to lift 50 lbs. Candidate will be expected to work (35-40 hours) Monday -Friday and one day on the weekend and some holidays. A degree in marine science (or working toward a degree in the environmental field) is preferred. SCUBA certification or willingness to become certified before the start day is necessary.
