Love the outdoors and have a passion for trees? Join our team as a Seasonal Tree Inspector, where you'll help protect and preserve our community’s urban forest while enjoying hands-on fieldwork in the fresh air!
The tree inspector assists the city forester with the implementation of the Plant Pest Program.
Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Inspects community trees
- Identifies and recommends control measures for tree pests and diseases
- Communicates with residents about Minnetonka's forestry programs
- Inspects tree and stump removals
- Provides general care for trees
- Plants trees on city property
Other Job Functions:
- Assists with administrative and GIS tasks
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Knowledge and ability to identify trees and diagnose Dutch elm disease, oak wilt and emerald ash borer
- Must pass the Minnesota State Tree inspector examination within 2 weeks of employment
- Possesses a valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications:
- Education in forestry or natural resources with completed courses in dendrology, plant identification, forest pathology or entomology
- Forestry or natural resource field experience
- Ability to identify most Minnesota trees
- Certified tree inspector
- Experience with ArcMap or GIS computer programs
- Able to work for six months, approximately June through November
Additional Information
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft office suite
Skilled in:
- Working with small tools and reading maps
- Effectively communicating with the general public
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to:
- Take accurate field notes including mapping
- Provide excellent customer service to residents and area businesses
- Learn pertinent city policies and regulation
- Maneuver difficult terrain, on foot, if necessary
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Pay close attention to detail
- Work independently with varied supervision
- Work productively, efficiently and safely
- Commit to follow the organization's shared values
